Verdict Is Still Out, On Paper Klitschko Looks Good

by Buster Paris
4/26 - It was a fourth round knock out and he’s now 44 wins, 40 by KO with only 3 losses. On paper it looks great. On paper he looks great, but the verdict unfortunately is still out on if Wladimir Klitschko is great.

This past Saturday night, Wladimir Klitschko fought and beat Eliseo Castillo - well, Klitschko fought and Castillo made a nice target.

Middleweight Lightning to Strike Twice?

by Garth Weaver
4/26 - Well folks, here we are, just a week away from the eagerly anticipated match between WBA heavyweight champ John “The Quiet Man” Ruiz and former IBF middleweight, super-middleweight, and cruiserweight champ James “Lights Out” Toney at Madison Square Garden on April 30th.

Klitschko Stops Castillo in Four
Former WBO heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko stopped previously unbeaten Eliseo Castillo in Dortmund, Germany. With just seconds before the end of the 4th, Klitschko, 44-3, landed a straight right that had Castillo, 18-1-1, shaky as he rose to his feet, which prompted the referee to stop the fight. - April 24th

Guzman and Chavez Jr. Successful!
Before a sold-out crowd at Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, TX, WBO Super Bantamweight Champ Joan Guzman defeated Fernando Beltran Jr., improving his sterling record to 23-0, as the judges scored the 12-round fight 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. scored a knock out victory at the hands of Travis Hartman. Having tasted the mat in the second round and receiving and offensive onslaught from Chavez in the third, Hartman’s corner threw in the towel. [Guzman pre-fight Q&A] - April 24th

ESPN Show a Success | Mosley Returns with a Victory, Margarito KO's Cintron

4/24 - Caesars Palace, Las Vegas - A return to welterweight is just what the candy shoppe ordered for 'Sugar' Shane Mosley. Having gone 1-4 with a no-contest over his previous six fights, Mosley was again prime for the taking after choosing a rather difficult opponent last night. Instead, Mosley reminded fans why he still could become the undisputed welterweight champ.

The 33-year old Mosley, 40-4, was impressive, showing good movement, along with control stealing combinations when he had to. After 10-rounds of action, Mosley had scored a unanimous decision over David Estrada, 18-2, by scores of 98-91, 97-93 [twice]. The win could set up a summer-time showdown with WBO welterweight champ Antonio Margarito.

In the main-event on the ESPN PPV telecast, WBO welterweight king Margarito dropped 'interim' champ Kermit Cintron, 25-1, four times, causing Kermit's corner to halt the bout at 2:12 of the 5th round.

After a gash opened up on a solid punch in the third round rushing blood into Kermit's eye, Margarito took over landing power shots almost at will, giving the previously unbeaten Cintron a one-sided drubbing. After Margarito, 31-4, dropped Cintron late in the 4th, he came back in the 5th to end it, dropping him twice more to force a corner stoppage.

In the evening's only heavyweight fight, 'The Boxing Banker' Calvin Brock weathered a 7th round knockdown, to win a 10-round unanimous decision over former title-challenger Jameel McCline. In clearly his biggest fight to date, Brock, who weighed some 50-pounds less that McCline, remained unbeaten landing the harder and more telling blows of the fight. • Discuss at the FORUM

Williams Remains Perfect, Decisions Cauthen
Undefeated Paul Williams kept his perfect record intact by registering a 10-round unanimous decision over Terrance Cauthen Friday on "ShoBox: The New Generation." - April 23rd

Things Look Grim for Dominic Guinn

by Frank Gonzalez Jr.
4/23 - Friday night at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Heavyweights Dominic "Southern Disaster" Guinn (25-2-1-18 KO's) and Friday "The 13th" Ahunayu (20-3-2-11 KO's) faced each other in what may have been one of the least entertaining fights I've seen on FNF-and I've seen a few. Neither fighter did enough to win a single round convincingly. In the end, after ten boring rounds, the Judges scored 97-93 and 95-95 twice, rendering it a Majority Draw.

TalkingBoxing with DANNY McDERMOTT

by Brian Skjold
4/22 - Undefeated junior lightweight prospect, Danny McDermott doesn’t fit the usual mold. Many prospects these days are young, baby-faced kids, coming out of the Olympics or highly decorated amateurs with more titles than you can shake a stick at. But, McDermott is just a little bit different. Danny has the amateur experience (54-6) and now enters the sport under the tutelage of one of the best trainers in the business, Buddy McGirt. At 25 years of age McDermott carries a maturity into the ring that is uncommon among many prospects.

“I’m glad I didn’t turn pro sooner. I think I’m more at a mature level and I can see things a little better. I think it’s perfect to turn pro at 25. Look at Bernard Hopkins, he’s 40 and he’s not even considered an old man.”

Rejuvenated Ellis Looks for a Comeback
by Julius Stecker
Kenny Ellis is in comeback mode right now. This past June, Ellis went into fellow middleweight contender Troy Rowland’s back yard at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, Michigan on ESPN. After hurting Rowland early in the fight, he failed to win a round the rest of the way. - April 22nd

Froch Shines in Hollywood
After a 7-month break, British super middleweight champ Carl Froch debuted on HBO Latino last night, scoring an 8th round stoppage over respected WBC #11 Henry Porras at the Avalon in Hollywood. “I said I was going to make America sit up and take notice and I have done just that,” said Froch after the bout. - April 22nd

ESPN PPV Worth The Money, Experts Weigh-In

by Julius Stecker
4/22 - Pay-per-view boxing has really hurt the sport. Fans have been ripped off far too many times and look no further for a recent example a few weeks back. Yeah, you know the one. Who in their right mind would lay down $44.95 of their hard earned money to watch WBC champ Marco Antonio Barrera butcher a guy named Monzake Fana?

Personally I don’t like to fork out money on many PPV’s as in the past my buddies and I would split the cost on the fight cards, so I would only spend around a reasonable $5 or $10 bucks. Now ESPN has smartened up, giving us a breath of fresh air, and no it is not the upcoming NFL Draft. Low and behold ESPN has entered sports toughest arena; boxing. :: ESPN PPV Participants Discuss Bout from Caesars

John Defends WBA, Bests Gainer

Williams vs. Cauthen Featured on ShoBox

4/22 - Undefeated welterweight Paul Williams battles former Olympic bronze medalist and current IBF and WBA #14 contender, Terrance Cauthen tonight on Showtime from Santa Ynez, CA. What will Cauthen do do secure the win? "A lot of movement, tight defence and deceving power," said Cauthen. "I'll punishment fit the crime. I'll do whatever I have to win. We got the best two welterweights coming together." Williams was quick and to the point saying, "it's gonna be a good fight. I'm gonna do my thing." • Discuss at the FORUM

TalkingBoxing with DIEGO CORRALES
"DON'T..MISS..MAY..7TH! It's going to be HELL ON WHEELS!"

by Coyote Duran
4/21 - Aren't second chances groovy? Don't answer that. You know they are. And they come in all varieties and degrees, too, for all kinds of folks.

Take for instance, super-cool, yet brooding actor David Caruso. One year into his gig as super-cool, yet brooding detective Jon Kelly on NYPD Blue, Caruso got too big for his TV pants and decided he was leaving to go make movies with Nicolas Cage and Carrot Top.......or.....someone like that. Well, the critics weren't too kind to Caruso or his career move and pretty much stomped all over him for everything he did from then on out. But one day, The Second Chance Fairy popped in on Caruso and tapped him in the melon with a wand and said, "Get up and go to work, Carrot Top." Next thing you know, Caruso's on CSI: Miami (Free plug, CBS! Hook me up with a T-shirt!!!!!!) as super-cool, yet brooding Lieutenant Horatio Caine and he lived happily ever after instead of crappily ever after.

While Margarito was talking at the dais, Cintron continued eating his steak and fries.

Gainer Makes Weight at Third Attempt!

by Harry Summers Jr.
4/21 - Ahead of their WBA featherweight title clash tomorrow in Jakarta, Indonesia, defending champion Chris John, 34-0-1 (19), comfortably made weight today, weighing in at 125.60lbs, while challenger Derrick "Smoke" Gainer struggled. In fact, the ex-champ, who at 5'9" has a large frame for a featherweight, almost ran out of time!

On the first attempt, Gainer, 39-6-1 (24), weighed in at just over 129lbs. He was then given the customary two-hour deadline to make the 126lb limit. An hour later, he weighed in at 126.95lbs. With just 5 minutes remaining, a drained-looking Gainer finally made the weight, coming in at 125.20lbs. Some verbal barbs were exchanged between both parties at the weigh-in. This came after a controversial press conference yesterday, which saw an agitated Gainer storm out. • Discuss at the FORUM

TalkingBoxing with JEFF "LEFT HOOK" LACY
"I duck nobody and I’m willing to fight anyone, anywhere, in their hometown. It doesn’t matter"

by Brian Skjold
4/20 - That just about sums up IBF’s super middleweight champion, Jeff Lacy. He is willing to take and make the fights that are best for the sport. On August 6, in his hometown of Tampa, Florida, Lacy defends his title against former WBC super middleweight champ Robin Reid, on Showtime’s Championship Boxing Series. Like always, Jeff is looking to stay busy and stay sharp. He has no plans of waiting around for anyone.

“I want to get this mandatory out of the way. I’m not going to wait on Joe Calzaghe. I’m going to continue doing what I’ve been doing...staying busy and performing in the ring. If I sat around and waited that long I’ll only get rusty.”

TalkingBoxing with CALVIN BROCK
Brock: "I will be a World Chapion this year!"

by Garth Weaver
4/19 - Last week, I had a great discussion with IBF #14 ranked heavyweight contender Calvin Brock, 24-0, as he discussed his upcoming Saturday night showdown on ESPN pay-per-view with IBF #5 Jameel McCline, 31-4. Coming off an impressive, third round knock out victory over contender Clifford Ettienne, the Charlotte, North Carolina native found himself with an enormous opportunity and is in complete focus for his biggest fight to date. A win against McCline leads to a potential title shot, a chance Calvin believes he is destined to.

"They're still looking for the real Champion, I'm the person that's going to come up and clear it all up," Brock said. "So when it's asked around the world who's Heavyweight Champion, they are gonna say it's me, Calvin Brock."

TalkingBoxing with JOAN GUZMAN
"I want to represent the Dominican Republic like Chavez used to represent Mexico"

by Jason Peck
4/19 - Super-bantamweight has an exceptional surprise neatly tucked away and about to explode, but not just yet. In the division that began the epic trilogy between Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales, World Boxing Organization junior featherweight champion Joan Guzman destroyed a tough Agapito Sanchez in seven rounds in February of 2004. Alright, so maybe he wasn't tucked away to deep in the pile, but truth be told, Guzman will one day be in the mainstream of the boxing world with a unification clash that has alluded him.

Instead of a unifying this week with World Boxing Council champion Oscar Larios, who has seemingly avoided an attempt at the WBO strap, Guzman faces undefeated Fernando Beltran Jr. this Friday night in a Sycuan Ringside Promotions event in Hidalgo, TX. A win against the dangerous Mexican would keep his dream of unifying a reality, so long as Larios accepts the challenge.

'Super' Judah Announces Rivera Showdown, May 14th
Trinidad-Wright Mega-Fight Becomes Mega-Card with the Addition of Judah

by Brian Skjold
4/19 - Undisputed welterweight champ “Super” Zab Judah, formally announced today in a national conference call that he will make the first defense of his championship on May 14, against number one mandatory challenger Cosme Rivera. The bout will take place as the co-feature on the Trinidad-Wright card, to be broadcast on HBO Pay-Per-View.

On February 5th, Judah turned his career around in spectacular fashion with a 9th round TKO over Cory Spinks. But, he hasn’t silenced all of his critics yet. In the past, Zab seems to have had the tendency to lose focus when he’s not training for a super-fight. But now, as he sits atop the welterweight division he seems willing to do what it takes to win and stay on top.

Nevada Medical Experts Decline Mesi, NSAC to Hear Findings

4/19 - Yesterday, the Nevada Athletic Medical Advisory Board voted unanimously against the ring return of former WBC #1 contender Joe Mesi. Within the coming weeks, the Nevada State Athletic Commission [NSAC] will consider and review the medical boards' findings and decide Mesi's fate in the state of Nevada. If NSAC issues a lifetime boxing-suspension, Mesi will likely find it difficult to fight in other states.

The Buffalo, NY native testified that he felt 100% healthy and respected Dr. Robert Cantu, head of neurosurgery at Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA, testified that there was no greater risk of another subdural hematoma if he were to fight again. Mesi, 29-0, was dropped three times in the final two rounds of his last heavyweight fight with Vissilly Jirov when he suffered bleeding on the brain. • Discuss at the FORUM

Wladimir Klitschko Is Owed An Apology and Good Luck

by Buster Paris
4/18 - I started to write this coming from a completely different place. My purpose before doing any research was to tear Wladimir Klitschko apart. I couldn’t understand why he’s still relevant and every time I thought about it I’d get so irked that I couldn’t see straight..

Tito and Winky Hype Fight at National Conference Call

by Brian Skjold
4/16 - On May 14, Winky Wright will make his first trip to 160 pounds after 51 fights in the junior middleweight division. His opponent will be none other than former welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight champ, Felix Trinidad. This bout is huge for both fighters and could potentially send the loser into retirement. talkingboxing.com recently took part in a conference call for their upcoming fight on HBO Pay-Per-View.

A win by Winky virtually guarantees a shot at undisputed middleweight champ, Bernard Hopkins and the big pay checks that go with these marquee match-ups. A win by Tito adds fuel to his already impressive legacy and sets him up for a lucrative Hopkins rematch. Both fighters seem extremely confident in their skills and game plan.

Diaz Suffers Cut, Elder Fight Off
Sparring today for his WBA title defense on April 23rd, Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz suffered a gash over his left eye, which will cancel his showdown on ESPN PPV with Ebo Elder. TalkingBoxing with Norman "Stoney" Stone
"I honestly believe that this will be his best performance ever"

by Julius Stecker
4/13 - Norman “Stoney” Stone has earned a reputation as boxing’s most intense trainers. A media and fan darling he is not, but the trainer of WBA champion John Ruiz he is. That alone gets him some big-time credit, as Ruiz, love or hate him, has beaten some of the best heavyweights in recent times.

Aside from his antics and passion displayed in the ring, Stone gets everyone talking outside it. A recent setting was the Madison Square Garden Theater to announce the WBA title fight between his fighter Ruiz and #1 challenger James Toney. Long story short, Toney and Stone almost came to blows and their scuffle ended the conference early. Words can't explain the situation or do it any justice, so just watch our video coverage to get the full picture. | for the quick interview

TalkingBoxing's British Update
Arthur, Thaxton take titles; Oakey takes small step back to big time

by Dave Crellin
4/14 - Was this the second coming of Alex Arthur? The young Scot defended his British super-featherweight title and took away the Commonwealth title of countryman Craig Docherty with a very impressive display of control, technique and punching. Since the brasher version of Arthur got his come-uppance against Michael Gomez a year and a half ago, Arthur has been boxing much more calmly and this paid huge dividends against Docherty.

Docherty was always in with a shout and he played in his part in an absorbing contest. With both working body and head, Docherty established a good jab and a high pace before Arthur began to assert himself. But these two former amateur team-mates produced some quality exchanges of fierce punches in between periods of cagier boxing. Arthur frequently, but not always, came out on top.

Toney: "I'm a Fighter, I will KO Ruiz"

4/12 - Gaze into the dark, deep-set eyes of James "Lights-Out" Toney and one gets the impression he's starting as a Great White Shark - pure in purpose, devoid of fear - perfectly suited to his environment.

But the environment Toney seeks to dominate is much larger than the ocean. It's the World Boxing Association's heavyweight division - currently occupied by two-time WBA champion John "The Quietman" Ruiz, who arrogantly - and mistakenly believes that James Toney is nothing more than a "steppingstone" opponent for their April 30th encounter at the famed Madison Square Garden in New York.

John Resumes Sparring; Looks Awesome

by Harry Summers Jr.
4/11 - When current WBA Featherweight champion Chris John, 34-0-1 (19), suffered a cut over his right eye almost two weeks ago in training, it appeared as though sparring would be absent from the final weeks the Indonesian's training camp ahead of his April 22 defense against ex-champ Derrick "Smoke" Gainer, 39-6-1 (24). But yesterday, the 25-year-old was surprisingly back in the ring, thanks to a full face, hockey mask-like head guard, which his team had sent express from overseas to Belok Village, Bali Island, Indonesia, where they have been training.

In his first sparring session in 10 days, John looked awesome, dominating the ring and knocking down well-equipped Filipino Dexter Delada with a thumping right hand to the sternum. Also in the session, John landing a number of beautifully timed overhand rights, something trainer Craig Christian claims they have been working on in preparation for the slick-moving Gainer. Despite his status in the featherweight division, Chris John still is a work in progress and come April 22, his team is confident he will be unveiling a slew of new tricks. • Discuss at the FORUM

TalkingBoxing's British Update
Arthur-Docherty a sizzler; Thaxton comeback continues

by Dave Crellin
4/7 - No real matches of note last weekend, so let’s get straight on with a preview of Friday’s much-anticipated all-Scottish clash. Alex Arthur has another chance to box for the British super-featherweight belt he lost spectacularly to Michael Gomez nearly a year and a half ago. He’s matched with Craig Docherty, who brings the Commonwealth belt to the ring. This is Arthur’s big chance for redemption following the Gomez catastrophe – a loss here would dynamite his pretensions.

Why Trinidad-Wright? I’d Rather see Trinidad-Sturm and Wright-Ouma

by Jason Peck
4/5 - When Oscar de la Hoya stepped into the ring against Felix Sturm last June, the only thing on his mind was the mega-fight with Bernard Hopkins that would follow his speedy crushing of this greenhorn from Germany. Instead he was smacked around the ring for 12-rounds by Sturm and his iron jab before winning one of the most questionable decisions in recent memory.

Sturm’s dominating performance earned him quite a few American fans that night, but it didn’t earn him quite enough respect. A lot of names have surfaced as heirs to the middleweight throne after Hopkins retires, and Sturm’s is rarely mentioned. The moment nearly arrived a few months ago when a tentative date was set for a bout between Sturm and former middleweight champ Felix Trinidad as part of the Puerto Rican’s comeback tour.

The highly anticipated WBC/WBA unification showdown lived up to its pre-fight hype as Mormeck and Braithwaite exchanged huge shots over the first half of the fight. Mormeck, 31-2, started slow, taking some well placed body shots from Braithwaite, 21-1, but gathered himself in the 7th and landed a monster right that sent Braithwaite to the canvas. After the standing count, Braithwaite hung on to finish the round. :: Pre-Fight Q&A with Mormeck and Braithwaite
