Hatton, Warren Forced to Offer More to Entice Tszyu to Manchester
12/30 - Matt Watt, manager of IBF jr. welterweight champion
Kostya Tszyu, has no issues with his champ fighting IBF #1 contender Ricky Hatton in Manchester, England at MEN Arena, but he is demanding more money than the $5.2 million that is on the table. "At the end of the day the Manchester fight comes down to economics," Watt said. "The promoters [Frank Warren] are making a lot of additional money for themselves by staging the fight there." Watt made it clear that there are other options and that Kostya doesn't have any outside pressure to make the fight. "Kostya is under no pressure from Showtime," Watt said. "Showtime has always been very supportive of him." Tszyu will face being stripped by the IBF in August, 2005 if he does not defend his title against Hatton, but with a potential Oscar De la Hoya bout, a title isn't needed. "If Kostya was to fight Oscar De La Hoya for $10 million, there would not have to be a world title belt involved," Watt said. Source:

The Cinderella Man - James J. Braddock
by
Dr. Joe de Beauchamp
12/30 - The movie of James J. Braddock starts in a few weeks, called the Cinderella Man. On the big screen depicts Braddock and his family going through the hard times of the great depression. His struggles helped many unemployed rise above the poverty of the times. He gave them hope. Bankers and the rich looked up to Braddock as he hit hard to climb in the seat as world champion. The nation's economy placed over twenty percent of the population in bread lines. Rather than allow his family to starve, he boxed to win the heavyweight championship of the world.

Marquez Wants $1.5M for Pacquiao; Fourth Time the Charm for Woods?
12/30 - On the heels of a megafight between two of the best featherweights in the sport, Ignacio Beristain, manager of WBA/IBF champ
Juan Manuel Marquez, has threatened to pull his star fighter out of a February 26th rematch with Manny Pacquiao. The gripe from Team Marquez is that he is currently not been given a fair share of the pot and would like a minimum of $1.5 million for the HBO televised fight. Marquez has been preparing for this fight since November in Mexico City and skipped over the Christmas celebrations to train and workout. Marquez is focused for the fight, but Beristain has his doubts saying, "I hope that by mid-January, we should have a deal concluded but if not I don't think there's going to be a fight." Source:

by
Coyote Duran
12/28 - I've always been a Kermit Cintron fan. A "Kermaniac", if you will. (Like that? I just made that up!) So when I first interviewed him, I was delighted to find that Kermit was just as enthusiastic to talk to me as I was to talk to him. I made sure to tell the WBO "Interim"/NABF Welterweight titlist that I felt like we had that "Cosell-Ali" connection and that if ever he needed press time or just an ear to listen to him fire away, he could always call me. So imagine my surprise when, the night before Christmas Eve, the phone rings and it's Kermit "The Killer" Cintron, 24-0 with 22 KOs, on the other end.
What's new with Cintron? Well, his upcoming February 18 fight with Argentinean Sebastian Lujan is now kaput due to Lujan pulling out (For whatever reason, I'm not sure) of the bout. >>>> much more from one of boxing's best young stars
Talking Boxing with WAYNE BRAITHWAITE
"I am "the man" to beat in the division"
by
Coyote Duran
12/27 - It's no secret that the cruiserweight division is one of the shallowest weight classes in the fight game today. It almost seems weird that a weight class so young has already experienced what some may call its "halcyon days"; but it has. With the exception of 2003's monumental IBF title clash between James Toney and Vassiliy Jirov, the cruisers haven't seen finer days since a young Evander Holyfield ran roughshod through the division in its "toddler years."
Although not as electric a presence, WBC Cruiserweight titlist Wayne "Big Truck" Braithwaite (21-0 with 17 KOs) hopes to change this and soon bring his division out of its funk. Braithwaite won the WBC strap in late 2002 and has defended it 3 times since against Ravea Springs, Luis Pineda and Louis Azille.

Freitas is Back, but is the former Champion Hiding Something?
by
Mario Sergio Lima - Ringside
12/13 - Six thousand fans attended the Ibirapuera Gymnasium, one of the biggest in Sao Paulo, to pull for Acelino Freitas in his long awaited comeback to Brazil (the last time he fought here was against Orlando Soto, in 2001). The night was really well organized by Banner Promotions, very different from the usual fight nights here. Everything was set for a great performance by Freitas, but it was impossible to see the improvements he promised after the training camp in the United States in November. Fernando Saucedo, a journeyman with a record of 16 victories, 3 Defeats and two draws (not a single knockout) came prepared to survive the ten rounds, no matter what and managed to escape Freitas' attacks and even losing a shutout to the former champ, could be considered one of the victorious fighters of the night.

Vitali Klitschko Wins As Expected, Stops Williams
by Frank Gonzalez Jr.
12/12 - Vitali Klitschko is the most dangerous Heavyweight in Boxing today. He’s a very good boxer for a man his size. He hits hard, accurately and from all angles. He usually hurts his opponents quickly. He has won 34 of his 37 fights by knockout. He rose to prominence after his battle with former
HW Champion, Lennox Lewis, who retired afterwards. Vitali was pummeling
Lewis until getting caught with a Lewis punch that opened up a nasty cut over
his left eye, forcing the ringside doctor to stop the fight. A lot of
people weren’t happy with the stoppage but the cut was serious enough to
warrant the stoppage. He lost that fight, but gained the respect and admiration of even the fans that have questioned his ability in the past.

by
Mario Sergio Lima
12/10 - With promoter Art Pelullo of Banner Promotions putting his star fighter Acelino Freitas on stage in Sao Paulo, Brazil tomorrow for his first bout since a stoppage loss to Diego Corrales, it will not be long before Freitas and Pelullo score another title shot. Lightweight champ Julio Diaz was to be showcased in a 10-round non-title fight on the under card of the Freitas-Fernando Saucedo tomorrow, unfortunately he is off the card, but a Freitas vs. Diaz bout for Diaz's IBF title will take place on HBO in April, 2005. Pelullo, who usually works with Showtime, said they still are in the picture for future fights.
In the most exclusive part of my interview, Pelullo was approached by WBA champ Juan Diaz's camp proposing a fight, but it fell through and it was also revealed that he talked to WBC 140-lb champ Arturo Gatti's camp for a fight and that HBO would be interested in doing it, however a shot at Gatti before Floyd Mayweather Jr. is unlikely. Something that is a bit more realistic and is also being discussed is the possibility of a tournament where the winner of the IB title fight between Freitas-Diaz would get the winner of a WBO title fight between Diego Corrales and Yodsanan Nanthachai, a fight that Pelullo is also trying to make. Tale of the Tape: Castillo v Casamayor
by
Carl Rice
12/4 -
Tomorrow, Joel Casamayor will be looking to be 2-0 in the lightweight division. Unlike most boxers these days, instead of taking the easy route, Casamayor is coming at one of the premier lightys in Jose Luis Castillo, the man who gave Floyd Mayweather fits in their first fight and gave a good showing in the second fight. Although he lost both of those fights, Castillo was looked upon as Mayweather’s toughest opponent to date, and against one of the best fighters in the world pound for pound, that’s saying a lot.
Casamayor’s last fight was his first at lightweight, a 10 round victory against Daniel Seda, an undefeated fighter at the time. But before that, he split 2 fights with Diego Corrales and these fights, his detractors have said, have show that Joes has diminished in his skills. Now he takes on perhaps one of the biggest test of his career. Here’s how both fighters stack up against each other. »» much more tale of the tape on Castillo-Casamayor

As If You Didn't Get Enough Latin Love Last Weekend!
by Coyote Duran
12/3 -
We knew it was bound to happen. Well maybe, we didn't but we boxing nerds sure as hell like it and we've probably watched the match thousands of times in the arenas of our imaginations.
Speaking of imaginations, five'll getcha ten that when Jose Luis Castillo (50-6-1 with 45 KOs) regained the WBC Lightweight (as well as The Ring World Lightweight championship) title, he never dreamt his first hurdle would be the enigmatic Cuban roughhouse Joel Casamayor (31-2 with 19 KOs), much less headlining a potentially explosive triple-header (supported by the Jeff Lacy/Omar Sheika IBF Super Middleweight title fight and Jeremy Williams/Samuel Peter heavyweight fight.) this Saturday on Showtime Championship Boxing. »» much more pre-fight breakdown with quotes from Castillo and Casamyor

After Tune-ups Dec. 11th, Diaz-Freitas on the Horizon?
12/3 - Being reported by
The Desert Sun, IBF lightweight champ Julio Diaz, 30-2, has decided to return to the ring in a 10-round, non-title bout on December 11th in Sao Paulo, Brazil. As for who the 24-year old Diaz will face is still up in the air, but winning is his only option. "We’re still trying to figure that out," said Diaz. "It’s going to be a tuneup for both me and [Acelino] Freitas." If and when both Fretias and Diaz get by their tune-ups, the duo could meet in a March, 2005 IBF title fight. Diaz has been rumored to fight WBA champ Juan Diaz in Texas, but Julio decided with Fretias saying, "now I’m the one they’re looking for. I decided to go with Freitas because I think I have to prove myself with a veteran with a name. Diaz is an undefeated fighter but they give you more credit for beating a name fighter and I need the HBO exposure."

"The True Test of the Next Middleweight"
by
Jason Peck
12/1 -
Bernard Hopkins will not be fighting on December 4th, although the choice of venue and opponent would suggest that William Joppy is expected to be executed in a fight card ominously titled "Season's Beatings." For on that day Joppy will face Jermain Taylor from Little Rock, widely regarded as the next great middleweight, in Little Rock. The fight will be what cements Taylor as the heir of Hopkins, and what seals the deal on the long and rugged career of William Joppy.
But when I feel the urge to dismiss Joppy my mind wanders back a few months, when young junior welterweight Francisco Bojado suffered his second career loss at the hands of the battle-hardened Jesse James Leija. Much has been said about Bojado since then, but not enough, I'm afraid, about the qualities of his opponent.

UP CLOSE WITH GLENCOFFE JOHNSON
“I proved that I belong here, and I’m looking forward to the next fight to do the same thing”
12/1 - As far as boxing goes, there are far more negative stories than positive ones. But Glen Johnson’s rise to the elite level of the light heavyweight division in 2004 is a story that can make any fight fan smile, and one that he carries with him as he prepares for another big challenge, a December 18 superfight with Antonio Tarver at Los Angeles STAPLES Center which aims to determine who is the true king at 175 pounds.
Johnson was a fighter who was always left on the outside looking in, always looking for the right opportunity to get a fair shake in a tough business. But when Johnson got the call to fight Roy Jones Jr. in September, he made the most of his opportunity, knocking out the future hall of famer in nine stirring rounds.
