TalkingBoxing.com's Mid-Year Awards
TUE July 29, JAMES STILLERMAN - With this year being a little more than halfway over it's time to evaluate the mid-year winners and runner ups for numerous boxing categories; fight, fighter, round, knockout, upset, prospect, and worst decision. The first half of 2008 has been on par with the success that 2007 had as many great boxers risked their undefeated records and belts to fight other upper echelon fighters. The second half of the year is shaping up to be just as good as the first half with many potential great fights such as...
Margarito Too Tough For Cotto!
SUN July 27, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - What a GREAT fight! Will beat skill. Brawler beat boxer. Stamina beat speed. Underdog beat favorite. Styles make fights and on paper, Cotto was rightfully the favorite because hes the better boxer, has good power and commanding ring generalship. But it came down to who could take a punch better. The story of this fight was Margaritos tremendous stamina and durability in a classic comeback victory.
Lacy Wins Battle, Ready for War
THU July 24, ANDRES ANTONIO CARRIEDO - With 45 seconds left in the ninth round of his fight Wednesday night against Epifanio Mendoza at the Morongo Resort and Casino in Cabazon, CA, Jeff Lacy looked like a tired and beaten fighter. Lacy had started strong and stung Mendoza many times in the first five rounds. However, Mendoza had also hit Lacy repeatedly with right crosses and uppercuts and hurt Lacy badly in the second, sixth and eighth rounds.

Cotto-Margarito: Skip Around "The Ring?"
THU July 24, CLIFF ROLD - Loyal readers know it's true. For all of Boxing's troubles, Welterweight has remained the center that holds. It's been a vibrant, dependable cog in the game for most of their life, their father's life, even their grandfather's life. Few divisions have had its remarkable array of quality prizefighters, quality matches and, ultimately, quality fights. [Link Requires You To Become a Member at MaxBoxing.com]
Fall Flex Schedule; To Feud or not to Feud
WED July 23, ANDRES ANTONIO CARRIEDO - Originally, it looked like Kelly Pavlik was going to fight a respectable non-160 lb. opponent in a WBC and WBO 160 lb. title defense in Atlantic City, NJ on HBO's 9/27 World Championship Boxing telecast and that HBO was going to run two PPV shows with fairly weak headlining bouts (Joel Casamayor-Juan Manuel Marquez on 9/13 and Shane Mosley-Ricardo Mayorga on 10/11) by traditional PPV standards against strong Showtime Championship...

Talking Boxing with Paul Williams
WED July 23, Marylyn Aceves - What do you think about your last fight against Quintana?
Paul Williams: The last fight I knew I had something to get up for and not get caught off guard ever again... of course it was more than something I had to prove in the ring. I had to show that I had could take on a fellow who just beat me and virtually destroy him once the bell rang. I proved he didnt have my number. The media was saying I would have no answer...

A Pre-Fight Look at Cotto vs. Margarito
MON July 21, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - The current WBA Welterweight champion, Miguel Cotto (32-0, 26 KO's) of Caguas, Puerto Rico has been skillfully managed, and not only built up his record and confidence, but actually gave him the incremental, slow cooked experience to become the very well rounded 'fighter' he is today. There are many schools of thought on how fighters in boxing should be brought up and Cotto's is a story of great success in that everyone involved has made money....

The Rating Game - Top 10 P4P List
MON July 14, ANDRES ANTONIO CARRIEDO - I've been told by some old timers that the pound for pound rankings were invented as a way to give the late great "Sugar" Ray Robinson his just due ranking as the #1 boxer despite his size disadvantage in any hypothetical matchup against heavyweights. In this day and age, it seems almost absurd to consider that a heavyweight might have topped a discussion about the world's top boxers.
Wladimir Klitschko Gets a KO Win Over Tony Thompson
SUN July 13, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - On Saturday at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg Germany, WBO #1 contender Tony Thompson (31-2, 19 KO's) of the USA, fought IBF/IBO/WBO Heavyweight Champion, Wladimir Klitschko (51-3, 45 KO's) for eleven tough rounds, scoring more punches against Klitschko than anyone I've seen and yet lost by knockout in the eleventh round, compliments of a Klitschko right hand that put him down, seeing him barely make it up at ten and waved out by the referee, Joe Cortez.

What the Sport of Boxing Can Learn from Open Wheel Racing
THU July 11, ANDRES ANTONIO CARRIEDO - Perhaps I'm something of a masochist, but not only am I a dedicated and fervent fan of boxing, but also an avid open wheel racing fan. To the mainstream, these are the antithesis, or red-headed step children (if you will), of the two most recent "fastest growing sports" in America, mixed martial arts and stock car racing. Open wheel racing began its downfall in 1996 when the Owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Tony George, and the owners of the major racing teams (CART) split and their drivers raced in two separate leagues.
Pound for Pound By Default
WED July 9, ANDRES ANTONIO CARRIEDO - In the aftermath of WBC 135 lb. titlist Manny Pacquiao's title winning effort against former titlist David Diaz, many boxing fans and pundits alike have proclaimed the Filipino icon the new king of the pound for pound rankings. The combination of Pacquiao's five division title holding resume, his national hero following in the Philippines and his budding popularity here in the United States have catapulted him to the top of many pound for pound rankings.
Is Pacquiao the Greatest Filipino Ever?
TUE July 8, JAMES STILLERMAN - Manny Pacquiao (47-3-2, 35KO) destroyed David Diaz (34-2-1, 17KO) last Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, en route to an impressive ninth round stoppage. Pacquiao dominated every single round and outperformed Diaz, who was fighting in his second defense of the title and displayed a gutsy performance, refusing to give up.
HBO & Racism - Is It True?
MON July 7, BUSTER PARIS - "They talk about Kelly Pavlik, a white fighter, like he's the second coming. Or they go crazy over Manny Pacquiao. But I'm a black fighter...
Just some of what Floyd Mayweather Jr. said to The Grand Rapids Press on Friday, July 4th 2008 - he went on to say:
"Is it racial? Absolutely. They praise white fighters; they praise Hispanic fighters, whatever. But black fighters, they never praise."*
Holt Rallies to Score Dramatic KO, Peterson Stops Castaneda
SUN July 6 - Hagler-Hearns gave way to Holt-Torres Saturday as fireworks arrived a day late on SHOWTIME. In one of the most dramatic and explosive opening rounds and rematches in recent memory, Kendall "Rated R" Holt and Ricardo Torres combined to knock each other down three times in 61 seconds on a truly special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation.
After Holt hit the canvas twice in 34 seconds, the WBO No. 2 contender rallied spectacularly to knock Torres out cold and win...
The Other American Middleweight
THU July 3, CLIFF ROLD - For the second time in the last three weeks, a thrilling Middleweight bout that ended with as many questions as answers gets a sequel. The last big sequel earned a passport stamp by way of some Florida geography form Arthur Abraham-Edison Miranda II and some Showtime love. Unfortunately for American fans, none of the cable outlets keeping the sport in the public consciousness are picking this one up. Instead, it falls to the 'net savvy to catch Felix Sturm-Randy Griffin II. [Link Requires You To Become a Member at MaxBoxing.com]
