Tyson Speaks!
Even with a year plus layoff, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, who defeated Clifford Ettienne in February of 2003, is making a predition: a 1st round KO over WBC/WBA 175-lb champ, Antonio Tarver. "I'll fight him and show Roy [Jones] how it should have been done: One round," said a confident Tyson, who spoke with The Arizona Republic. A long anticipated fight bewteen Jones and Tyson would only come about on Tyson's terms. "Roy's going to have to knock that guy out. He has got to beat that guy [Tarver] for any credibility."

Interview with HICKLET LAU
"I have nothing to prove anymore, everyone knows I am a warrior!"
by
Luke Callahan
Times are a changin' for boxing's best short notice fighter and highly talented welterweight,
Hicklet Lau. At 28-years of age and numerous wars with some of the best in boxing, Lau has now decided to change his strategy. "I have made the mistake in the past of fighting top fighters on short notice." The lion-hearted Lau continued, "It's the fighter in me that hates to say no to such opportunities, BUT I will only take fights from now on only if I feel I am well prepared for the fight that is offered to me." In his most recent fight, a well prepared Lau scored a 5th round DQ win overformer title challanger Freddy Cruz, a fight he was winning easily until the referee had saw enough. "I was wearing him down with my jabs, and body shots. I dont think he was gonna last until the end, but the referee thought he had seen enough and decided to stop the fight." Read on for more as Lau opens up to

HOLYFIELD TO FIGHT IN NOVEMBER
by
Brad Cooney
On Wednesday, I spoke with the
Evander Holyfield Camp concerning the rumors of a possible Vitali Klitschko fight. Ms. Tavisa Thomas [Evander's Assistant] said, "As of right now, the only thing that is a guarantee is that Evander will fight in November." Thomas went on to say, "Evander will fight in November, but an opponent has not yet been named". Having interviewed Holyfield in April, 2004 and asking him about his future in boxing, he told me that he see's it like this. "By fighting, I am minimizing the risk by doing something that I do well in life, and that is to fight." Many in the game of boxing, and fans alike feel he should quit. Whatever happens next for Holyfield, I wish him well!

Classy Freddie Cuevas Looking Forward to Ikeke
by
Julius Stecker
If you were to look up the definition of professional
in the dictionary, I would not be surprised if a picture of
Freddie Cuevas popped up. Cuevas, 23-6-1 with 16 KO's, has done what a professional is made to do throughout his entire career. He has fought ever guy they have put in front of him. He has sparred with one the best fighters of our era, Oscar De La Hoya. He knocked out perhaps the best fighter of the past 10 years to not win a title, Wilfredo Rivera, and he went a full 12 rounds with potential superstar Jermain Taylor and the man has never been stopped. He has won with class and he has lost with class.

'MERCILESS' Mercer Retires
As being reported by
realboxing.com, former WBO heavyweight champ "Merciless"
Ray Mercer has decided to retire from boxing after a stellar fifteen year career. Mercer ends his run at 33-5-1 and will go out on his own terms, as he has won three straight bouts - all by KO. "Ray cannot just be a journeyman fighting for chump change and none of the young guns have been willing to fight him," Team Mercer spokesman Vinny LaManna said on behalf of Mercer. "He has been contemplating retirement for some time and he feels that now is the right time for him to call it quits. Ray got sick of the politics involved in boxing. If you can't make money in your chosen profession, there is no reason to be risking your life anymore." LaManna also told RealBoxing that Mercer, who was scheduled to fight on June 8 against DaVarryl Williamson before he informed the promoters earlier this week of his decision, would be willing to come back to boxing if the right situation presented itself.

Gomez blasts Juuko; Rigby fades to defeat; Hobson-Swaby for cruiser titles
by
Dave Crellin
Either Michael Gomez is the next great super featherweight or Justin Juuko is a shadow of his former self. I suspect it's the latter. However, credit to Gomez, who came out with bad intentions on Saturday in Widnes. Juuko was on the floor within a matter of seconds following a well-timed left hand. Although up and giving the impression that the knockdown was a freak, Juuko found himself under siege, wobbled repeatedly and in truth did well not to touch down again. Gomez was sensing a big win, and was on fire with shots coming in from all angles.

Back in the Ring: A Look at Mayweather Minus the Extracurricular Activities
by
Andres Antonio Carriedo
It was a thing of beauty. Four consecutive right hands finished off a nearly flawless performance for the man we all know as "Pretty Boy"
Floyd Mayweather Jr. Well some people still call him Lil' Floyd, but the disturbing thing is that since his dominant victory over Phillip N'dou last November Mayweather has also been building a reputation of being known as "Floyd Mayweather the guy that keeps getting himself arrested."

A Title Worth Fighting For
by Jim Cawkwell
The month of April always seems to stick out in my mind as having a special significance. I suppose it was because in that month back in 2001 I watched the virtual destruction of British boxing. In the space of a week not only did Naseem Hamed lose his unbeaten run, but also then universally recognized heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was dethroned in South Africa. »» more

Unbeatable equals Impossible
by
Julius Stecker
The hopes and dreams of numerous
Roy Jones' supporters were shattered in the blink of eye, by a blinding left hand from Antonio Tarver. The beliefs and ideals of faultlessness vanished before our very being in not even two rounds of prize fighting. What does this symbolize? Is it a changing of the guard in boxing, a lucky punch, or is it the end of an excellent era of ring brilliance? For many Roy Jones fans this was supposed to be different. Jones wasn't supposed to stumble around the canvas in order to regain his senses. Jones wasn't supposed to be capsized by one single blow.

War of Words Erupts at Trinidad-Mayorga Press Conference
by
Bill Emes
Las Vegas - So you were unimpressed by the undercard, if you want to call it that, prior to the "Shot heard round the world" on Saturday night? Most were, but not everyone is aware of the fireworks that occurred several hours before a single punch was thrown at the Mandalay Bay events center on Saturday. This of course was at the press conference held Saturday afternoon to announce a date for the return of

Calzaghe Eyes Unification
Following Roy Jones Jr.'s shocking second round KO defeat to Antonio Tarver, Britain's
Joe Calzaghe has a big incentive to beat IBF champ
Glen Johnson on June 12th in Manchester. A win over Johnson could lead to a IBF/WBC unification clash. Calzaghe said, "Tarver beat him the first time and I knew that he would beat him this time. Jones has always had a problem dealing with southpaws that's why he never wanted to fight me. Full respect to Tarver he is the number one guy now." Calzaghe continued, "Tarver's win has given me a massive incentive to really do a number on Johnson and get a fight with him. Tarver's now got the WBC title and I am confident of winning the IBF title so a unification showdown is a strong possibility." www.frankwarren.tv

Las Vegas -
Antonio Tarver shocked the boxing world last night with a 2nd round straight left that disconnected

Jones Jr., now 49-2, struggled to regain his bearings, as he reached his feet before the count of 10, but referee Jay Nady had seen enough, stopping the bout at 1:41 of the second round, as the still dazed Jones stood in front of him.

Jones wants heavyweight finale
WBC light heavyweight champion
Roy Jones has a big PPV match with
Antonio Tarver tonight, but that didn't stop him for exploring another shot at the heavyweight fame at a recent press event. Jones would love a bout with the 250-lb, WBC champ Vitali Klitschko, who also owns the title as best heavyweight in the world. "I would fight him. I love fighting big people, and I always had a fetish for fighting big people. My dad would tell you that, even when I was 14." Jones, who has hinted at a final fight after his Tarver bout, feels confident that a Klitschko bout wouldn't go the distance. "It won't go 12 [rounds]. No way!" Jones finished up by saying, "There is one guy that I'm going to take care of [Tarver], then it can be [Mike] Tyson or Klitschko. I know one of them will come, but I don't know who yet. We'll see who shows up first."

Klitschko Launches Inquiry into Fight
Wladimir Klitschko files a protest with lawyer Judd Burstein
Wladimir Klitschko has hired lawyer Judd Burstein to launch an inquiry into the pre-fight happenings of his April 10th bout with Lamon Brewster, a fight he lost by 5th round TKO. US Attorney General from Nevada, Daniel Bogden, is looking into claims that include a possible drugging or poisoning before or during the bout, pre-fight betting movements that went from 11-1 in favour of Klitschko to 3 1/2-1. Then there is the question about a missing press credential for one of Klitschko's team members that was issued with the proper photo identification. Klitschko had hoped that post-fight blood and urine samples would clear up confusion, but they were destroyed. Klitschko stated in a
AP report, "I have thought long and hard about requesting an investigation because I am concerned that the public, and particularly my fans, will see me as making excuses instead of taking responsibility for a loss. That is not my intention. I simply want to know the truth."

TalkingBoxing's British Update
Cook retains; Francis in to challenge Audley; Lynes drawn for Sarmiento
by
Dave Crellin
A quiet week again, but a couple of good matches on the Bridgend card saw Jason Cook retain his IBO crown and Dean Phillips continue his lightweight comeback. Cook was in a scrap, no question, and it's fair to say that challenger Kevin Bennett lost the fight more than Cook won it. With Bennett fighting in a protective crouch for most of the fight and scoring with sharp counters and accurate single shots, it was the aggression and work rate of Cook that nicked the fight.

Lance Whitaker: The Forgotten Heavyweight
by
Julius Stecker
Don't forget about heavyweight contender,
Lance Whitaker (28-2-1, 23 KO). With the current state of the heavyweight division, fight fans would be foolish to overlook a guy who stands 6'8", and who punches as if he has bricks in his gloves. Whitaker often gets stigmatized for being a slow starter, who throws pawing punches, but if you were to ask some of the guys he has fought, they would tell you otherwise.

beating his archrival from Germany, Michel Trabant, but on September 13th, 2003,
Jose Antonio Rivera, 37-3-1 with 24 KO, has shown above everything else contrary to what we believed, that yes you can be an American, and still get a righteous decision on someone else's turf. In all likelihood for most, we would've thought it only possible to win by knock out, because knocking Trabant down, which he did, might've not been enough in our eyes, or rather their eyes, to defeat the prospect. The German's do know fair play in the boxing world. To say anything lesser is to discredit our sport. Rivera won in the eyes of that nation, not by a split handed down verdict, but by the scores of 116-111, 116-114, 114-114 for a majority decision points win in Berlin. That was how he won the WBA welterweight title up for the vacancy.

WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO: R.I.P
You, the fan, can make a difference
by
Jason Herron
Anyone else tired of this so-called debate on who the "real" heavyweight champion is. Listen up, it's quite simple. Vitali Klitschko is
The Ring Magazine champion, so he is THE heavyweight champion of the world. For those of you who still follow the alphabet boys (WBC, IBF, WBA, etc.) religiously, you have my deepest sympathies, because there is obviously something seriously wrong with you.
