The Roy Jones Debate

by Carl Rice
9/30 - One year ago, if someone would have wanted to bet that Roy Jones would be knocked out twice over the next 365 days, I would have taken that bet against everything I have. But here we are, one year and a few months after defeating John Ruiz for a portion of the heavyweight championship; Roy Jones has been taken the distance by Tarver in a fight that many say Tarver could or should have won, knocked out in the rematch, and then knocked out again by Road Warrior Glen Johnson. What could have possibly led to this turn of events?

If reading other reactions from fans, commentators, and internet writers that answer spans from "Jones got old overnight" to "Jones was overrated to begin with". I will deal with the writer aspect of this later. For now, I want to focus on the man himself. Everyone that reads talkingboxing.com knows that in my "Tale of the Tape" article, I predicted that Jones would KO Johnson in the 8th round. But in that article, I made several points that cannot be overlooked. »» a must read article

TalkingBoxing's British Update
Eastman-Taylor?; Froch win pushes him up ladder; Hatton preview

by Dave Crellin
9/30 - Howard Eastman? Remember him? This weekend's card has already been well covered by Luke Chance here, but what of the fall-out following what was a solid if not standout performance by Howard Eastman? Eastman dominated late replacement Jerry Elliott after scheduled opponent Jorge Sendra was withdrawn with 24 hours to go (reasons given included brain scan irregularities and even, remarkably, shrapnel in the neck). Elliott's a tough old horse and certainly had the size to make Eastman think, with the Germany-based Nigerian weighing in at a whopping 178 pounds.

UP CLOSE WITH IVAN HERNANDEZ
NEW WBO Jr. Bantamweight Champion

by Brad Cooney
9/29 - When Ivan "Choko" Hernandez was just 10 years old, his brother invited him to the gym to watch the guys workout, and box a little bit. Choko's brother asked him if he wanted to put the gloves on and try it out a little bit, the result was simple. Choko knocked the poor kid out in the middle of the ring. "Choko" Hernandez was born in the city of Ensenada Mexico. He was the darkest of the family, so his brothers, and friends started to call him "Choco" after the word Chocolate. Ivan made the nickname even better, and changed the spelling from Choco, to Choko, the KO for Knockout.

His boxing career ever since then, has made his nickname a worthy one. Ivan had a brilliant amateur career as well. He was invited to represent his country of Mexico in the Olympic Games in Australia. Ivan opted to turn down this generous and most honorable offer to turn pro so that he could support his family. »» in-depth interview with the new champ

Feeling the Same Way about Investigators and Experts as a Fire Hydrant does a Dog

by Burt Sugar - Boxing Analyst CMXsports
9/28 - If you but watched the U.S. Open tennis quarterfinal match between Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati you saw three blown calls by the umpire which decided the match. Or the Olympic all-around gymnastic event in which American Paul Hamm won the gold medal after a scoring error cost the Korean his chance for gold. But had these miscarriages of sports justice occurred in a boxing ring there would have been immediate calls for an investigation of some sort by some elected official somewhere.

Which Jones did Tarver beat?

by Richard McManus
9/26 - Let me start out by saying that I picked Roy Jones to win against Glen Johnson. And I picked him to win both fights against Antonio Tarver.

All week fans and pundits have wondered which Roy Jones would show up. Would it be the Jones that terrorized Montell Griffin in their rematch? Would it be the Jones that coasted on his speed and skills to so many consecutive Light Heavy title defenses? Would another Roy Jones show up? »» McManus goes in-depth

JOHNSON STOPS JONES IN NINE
Under-card Action: Hernandez Stops "Too Sharp"

9/25 - FedExForum, Memphis, TN - IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson, 41-9-2, stopped over-match challanger Roy Jones Jr., 49-3, with a brutal right hand to the temple, knocking Jones out cold at 0:48 seconds of round nine. The blow, along with a long drop to the canvas, would give Jones a concussion after hitting the back of his head with extreme force. Jones was coming off a 2nd round stoppage loss to Antonio Tarver in May and chose the 36-year old Johnson as a 'tune-up' for a third bout with Tarver, but Jones' historic career could be coming to an end. Johnson, who had won the IBF strap with a decision win over Clinton Woods earlier this year, was extemely classy after the win, telling HBO analysist Larry Merchant, "I'm not the best, just a guy willing to fight the best."

In the co-main event, WBO jr. bantamweight Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson, 44-4, was dropped twice and was knocked out in the 8th round by 21-year old challanger Ivan "Choko" Hernandez, 19-0-1. Garcia by way of Mexico City was coming off a WBC Mundo Hispano Super Flyweight Title win over Bryan Garcia and had faced limited opposition up until his clash with one of boxing's best little men. Roy Jones: The Comeback Kid?

by Richard McManus
9/23 - On Saturday night Roy Jones Jr. will embark on a journey, down the winding and treacherous paths of what has become known in the sports world as the mythical "comeback trail". The careers of some former stars of the sport have stalled along these roadways most notably the recent goings on involving "Sugar" Shane Mosley and "Ferocious" Fernando Vargas.

On the other hand, some fighters end up on the trail and cause us to reflect as to whether or not they even belonged in the upper echelon of the sport, for example Zab Judah. »» much more from Mr. McManus! | Q&A with Glen Johnson

Monday Musings: I Called It!

by Carl Rice
9/20 - I see Oscar getting brutally beaten, the most vicious beating of his career and maybe one of the most savage beatings Hopkins has ever demonstrated. De La Hoya will do OK for the first few rounds, but for every question he asks Hopkins, Hopkins will have an answer, and sometimes they will be answered with an explanation point. After wearing Oscar down for several rounds, De La Hoya will realize that he has more than enough money in the bank, won't want to risk irrevocable damage to his body and mind, and will be stopped in the 9th round.
-- Carl Rice, "Tale of the Tape", 9/17/04

I don't mean to gloat; I just had to get that out of the way. Now I wasn't 100% on the button like the Hopkins body shot that took De La Hoya out, but I was very accurate. I will continue to attempt to establish myself as the premier boxing Nostradamus for this Saturday's Johnson v Jones Jr. fight and every big fight after. »» much more | the proof

De La Hoya: He Should've Moved Down

by Jason Peck
9/20 - He crumpled to the canvas with a resounding thud and the only thing on Oscar De La Hoya's mind was the agonizing pain caused by Bernard Hopkins' mighty kidney shot. But as he was covering his face with his gloves and pounding the ground in frustration I have to wonder if there was something else on his mind. Should I have seen that punch? Should I have used more Sugar Ray Leonard moves? Or even: Should I have boxed this heavy? Whatever the answer was he probably didn't find it, as the Golden Boy got up and uttered his first post-fight profanity, a four-letter word than rhymed with "truck." »» more

A Body Shot For The Ages

9/20 - When Bernard Hopkins knocked out Oscar de la Hoya with a perfectly placed, professional left hook to the body in Round 9 of their fight Saturday night the crowd seemed to be observing in stunned silence. "What happened,"fans surely asked, "Oscar was boxing so well, so fluid, there must be a mistake." But the boxing fans knew.

In the post-fight interview Oscar de la Hoya said the following: "I didn't think it was going to be so easy." Shocking statements to be sure. Oscar Shows Up But Goes Down

9/19 - Preconceived notions dominated many a mindset leading up to the Hopkins vs. De La Hoya fight for the Middleweight Crown. After winning a questionable Unanimous Decision over Felix Sturm last June in his debut performance at 160-pounds, who expected Oscar to have a chance at beating Bernard Hopkins, the best fighter in the Middleweight division? Moving up to 160 after having mixed results at 154 makes it reasonable to assume that this would be more then Oscar could handle. I remember what happened when Tito Trinidad tried that. A good enough start that Harold Lederman's 'unofficial' scorecard read 29-28 after three in favor of the 'Golden Boy'. A rather pensive Hopkins began the bout, but quickly figured out a gameplan and went on the attack in the fifth frame, stalking De la Hoya, using his superior reach and height to his advantage.

The final rounds saw Hopkins backing up De la Hoya with a litany of punches, forceably moving him, but to De la Hoya's credit, he hung tough and close to the action. After a rough sixth, round by round, it became evident that Oscar was landing fewer shots and began losing rounds. In the ninth round, Hopkins imposed his will for the first half of the round and midway through landed a left hook to the side of Oscar, putting him down in agony as referee Kenny Bayless counted 'the Golden Boy' out at 1:38. Scoring after eight complete rounds read 79-73, 78-74 Hopkins and 77-75 De la Hoya. After the bout, Hopkins reiterated that he wanted a 20th middleweight defense then a showdown with light heavyweights Antonio Tarver or Roy Jones. To boxing fans delight, De la Hoya didn't rule out a return to the ring. Under-card action: IBF/WBA featherweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez took a 12-round unanimous decision over Orlando Salido by scores of 117-111 (twice) and 118-110. With the WBC #1 ranking at 154-lbs on the line, Kofi Jantuah destroyed Marco Antonio Rubio just 30 seconds into the first round. Middleweight prospect Kelly Pavlik dropped Carlton Holland thrice to force a 2nd round stoppage. »» much more of the net's BEST post-fight report | pre-fight breakdown

Sturm victorious over Frazier

by Fabien Weber - ringside
9/18 - Former WBO middleweight champ Felix Sturm, 21-1, maintained his reputation as one of the top-3 fighters at middleweight with a unanimous decision victory over Robert Frazier, 30-6-3. It was an important night for the 25 year old German because beside winning the WBO intercontinental title he maintained his position as most credible challenger to the winner of the Bernard Hopkins-Oscar de la Hoya megafight which will take place in a few hours in Las Vegas. Against the very determined opposition of Frazier, Sturm scored with the more solid shots throughout the fight redisplaying the skills and the speed that enabled him to outbox the 'Golden Boy' on June 5th. The final scores read 116-112, 119-109 and 117-111. Sturm is mandatory challenger of the WBO. • Discuss at the FORUM

9/17 - Some people call him 'The Cobra'. Others call him 'The Hottest Prospect In The World'. Regardless of what you call him and whether you love him or hate him, Carl Froch is a man in possession of an enormous amount of talent. Already Commonwealth Champion after just 13 fights, and challenging for a British title in his 14th what is perhaps more impressive is the resume he is racking up.

Good wins against the powerhouse Ghanaan Charles Adamu, who Froch put on his seat, the tough and cute Canadian southpaw Mark Woolnough and now a chance to beat a very talented fighter in Damon Hague have put him at the very front of the queue as far as British prospects are concerned. Both Sides of the Fence Collide This Weekend

by Julius Stecker

On one end we have the Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya, a pop idol, with the mainstream appeal of Justin Timberlake, pocket book of Donald Trump, and the left hook of a howitzer. Hoye Gets Decision, Shot at Johnson-Jones Winner

9/17 - From Kewadin Casino in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan in what turned out to be a chess match in a IBF light heavyweight eliminator, undefeated Rico Hoye, 18-0, out lasted tough veteran Montell 'Ice' Griffin, 46-5, over 12-rounds. Hoye [interview] earned a hard fought, rather closely contested split decision on ShoBox as well as a title shot in the IBF against the Glencoffe Johnson-Roy Jones winner on September 25th. Throughout the fight, Hoye was on the attack and overcame an early clash of heads that opened a cut over his eye, but much to Griffin's credit, 'Ice' remained elusive making Hoye miss and fought at his pace, but didn't capitalize on the judges' scorecards when he had Hoye in close. Final scores read 116-112 (twice) for Hoye and 115-113 Griffin. »» post-fight reportDiscuss at the FORUM

Guilty Pleasures

by Carl Rice
9/16 - It's been a long time, but now I'm back. This is the first article I've written for TalkingBoxing in about 9 months. I've been busy taking care of some personal issues and I have come back to the place that started it all for me. Since my last article, many changes have occurred in the boxing world. Mayorga lost to Spinks, The Sugarman was defeated by Winky, Wlad got knocked out again while his brother won a portion of the championship, Roy Jones got knocked out, blah, blah, blah. But the most significant changes that were unforeseen and boxing fans are drooling over are this weekend's matchup between Bernard Hopkins and Oscar De La Hoya and the return of Felix Trinidad. »» much more

Cotto Wins WBO 140-lb Title, KO's Pinto
Santos Battles Margarito to Technical Decision

9/11 - Live on HBO from the Coliseo De Puerto Rico in San Juan, rising Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto, 21-0, scored a impressive 6th round knockout over previously unbeaten Kelson Pinto for the WBO jr. welterweight title. With Pinto besting Cotto twice in the amateurs in 2000, they both opened up the bout with aggression going right at one another to get the early advantage. It was second frame that changed the fight as Cotto drew first blood scoring a knockdown, that Pinto recovered from quickly. Cotto continued to box well, landing the telling blows in the third round, but in the 4th, Pinto changed pace and continued the attack winning the round. The success was short lived as Cotto dropped Pinto in the 5th frame and again in the 6th for good as referee Robert Ramirez waved the bout off just seconds in. With the loss, Pinto falls to 21-1.

In the co-feature, Daniel Santos retained his WBO 154-lb title over WBO 147-lb champ Antonio Margarito, who still holds that title, with a close split decision. It was once again a clash of heads that ended this bout prematurely as it did in their first encounter back in 2001. Santos, 29-2-1, came out in the first with a game plan to attack Margarito, 30-4, a style change for Santos who usually prefers to box from the outside. Both fighters landed big shots early in the bout, with Santos being the more accurate and Margarito landing the harder shots, until a 6th round accidental clash of heads opened up a large gash of the right eye of Margarito. The bout continued until the 9th round where the cut became too severe to continue. The scorecards after 9 complete rounds read 86-85, 87-84 Santos and 86-85 Margarito. »» more of the net's best big fight report | »» pre-fight preview

I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way that this, and the barnstormer that Kelson Pinto-Miguel Cotto promises to be are what boxing has been looking for recently. First things first. Hats off to IBO champ Carl Thompson, prospect David Haye threw everything but the kitchen sink at him and somehow the guy stayed up, although I'm sure a glove touched the mat in the first, but I don't know how his head even stayed on. Talking Boxing with SHARMBA MITCHELL

by Monty McMahon
9/7 - Sharmba Mitchell (55-3-0, 30 KOs) is patiently waiting for his shot at redemption. That shot will come in the form of a November 6th rematch with IBF Jr. Welterweight title-holder Kosta Tszyu (30-1-0, 24 KOs). Mitchell's road to redemption has been a long and winding one since a bum knee forced him to retire in the seventh round of his original bout with Tszyu back in 2001.

Over the past three years, the southpaw has had the look of a dominant fighter, notching victories over Vince Phillips and Ben Tackie. However, two previous dates for the rematch with Tszyu have been pushed back - a November 2003 date after Tszyu suffered an achilles tendon injury and a February 2004 date when Tszyu suffered a shoulder injury. Report on the Spinks-Gonzalez and Brewster-Meehan Bouts

by Frank Gonzalez Jr.
9/5 - Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, 26 year-old Welterweight Champion Cory Spinks improved his record to 34-2, with 11 KO's as he put on a boxing clinic against 33 year-old, former Lightweight Champion, Miguel Angel Gonzalez (49-4-1-39 KO's). Cory is the current holder of the WBA, WBC and IBF Titles.

The first round went Gonzalez' way as he was able to do some nice bodywork and press Spinks effectively. I thought they split round three and the rest of the rounds were all Spinks. The first few rounds were exciting. I was surprised at how well Gonzalez was doing against the slick boxing Spinks. »» the Shark and his awesome post-fight report are back, read on for much more

Talking Boxing with LAMON BREWSTER
"I want to get back to the past and I'm trying to be a gentleman"

by Luke Chance
9/3 - Antonio Tarver scores a second round knockout of Roy Jones Jr. Danny Williams wins by a fourth round knockout of Mike Tyson. Yamplier Azcuy wins by a first round knockout of Juan Carlos Gomez. What do these tell us? Simple. That all the stuff I have been hearing about Kali Meehan not being a worthwhile opponent is a load of hot air. Meehan is a worthwhile opponent, and he is coming to fight.

Lamon Brewster wins by a fifth round TKO of Wladimir Klitschko. What does this tell us? Simple. That he is a World Champion, and that he deserves some respect for his achievement. A lot of people have been dubious of Lamon's career best win, for whatever reason. Some have even been so arrogant and condescending as to call him a journeyman, a bum and other similar terms. It seems to be a plague of abuse that surrounds upset wins. »» Brewster goes on the record before his WBO title defense

TalkingBoxing's British Update

by Dave Crellin
9/2 - A new season in the UK, after a summer in which not just boxing fans but the whole nation was cheering on Amir Khan at the Olympics. And so from that great bastion of amateur sport we launch ourselves headlong into the glitz of Sports Network. Frank Warren's Newport show is headlined by Enzo Maccarinelli. Big Enzo, the tall and powerful WBU cruiserweight champion, squares off against Jesper Kristiansen, a Danish fighter of comparable height and at least some ability - a win over recent Enzo victim Gary Delaney says that much.

Wayne Braithwaite Prepares to Make History

by Jason Peck
9/1 - WBC world champion Wayne Braithwaite fights as a cruiserweight, a division typically ignored unless one of them moves up a weight class. Even Braithwaite, with an undefeated record, a lengthy list of knock-outs and a major title belt can't get mainstream attention. But that could change overnight.

At the present, there isn't a undisputed cruiserweight champion. The last time anyone can remember an undisputed reign was back in '88, when Evander Holyfield TKO'd Carlos DeLeon to capture the three title belts. As for now, the four major belts are divided between four different competitors, each hungry to for shot at history. »» more from Wayne Braithwaite
