Where Are They Now? Mike Weaver
MON September 29, SHAWN MURPHY - I spoke with former WBA Heavyweight champ Mike Weaver, who started boxing in the Marine Corp and turned pro in 1972. "Hercules" got his first title shot against Larry Holmes in 1979 and put forth an extremely tough fight, losing however by a TKO in the twelfth round. In 1980, he met WBA title holder John Tate and was losing by a wide margin going into the fifteenth round, when he performed the seemingly impossible, landing a perfect left hook to take the title...

Mosley KO's Mayorga with One Tick Left in the 12th!
SUN September 29, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - In a very sloppy Jr. Middleweight contest Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson California, former titlist 'Sugar' Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KO's) labored through 12 ugly rounds against wild-man, former welterweight titlist, Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO's) until knocking him down and out with one second left in the 12th round.

Making Our Beloved Sport Mainstream...Again
TUE September 23, JAMES STILLERMAN - The last two years in boxing have contained numerous electrifying boxing matchups involving Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez, Ricardo Torres-Kendall Holt, Joel Casamayor-Michael Katsidis among others which have contributed to the sport being rejuvenated and capturing people's imagination once again.

Last year many fighters risked their undefeated records and titles against one another which has not been seen in the sport for some time. This created a great financial year, generated media buzz and gave the sport a much needed boast. Nevertheless, while boxing seems headed in the right direction much more work needs to be done to improve the sport before...

Preparing for the Last Quarter: An Early Look Back with an Eye toward the Future
THU September 18, ANDRES ANTONIO CARRIEDO - After a dry five week spell (that featured only a disappointing Olympic tournament and a handful of decent ESPN2 and Telefutura cards) between the competing Joshua Clottey-Zab Judah, Dimitri Kirilov-Vic Darchinyan cards and the Juan Diaz-Michael Katsidas card, it's time for the stretch run of the boxing year. Saturday night featured a compelling matchup between Juan Manuel Marquez and Joel Casamayor on HBO PPV.

Weekend Wrap: Marquez, Bradley, Forrest Impress
MON September 15, ANDRES ANTONIO CARRIEDO - Saturday night's schedule got quite a bit thinner when, former two division titlist, Joan Guzman first failed to make the 135 lb. limit for his title challenge against unified titlist Nate Campbell then pulled out of the agreed to over the weight bout. Still Showtime went ahead and elevated the scheduled co-feature of Tim Bradley's first defense of his 140 lb. title. HBO also had it's relatively low budget PPV show.

Bradley Too Quick and Too Slick for Cherry
SUN September 14, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - I don't know about you, but I was furious that Joan Guzman pulled out of the Nate Campbell fight on Saturday. Guzman couldn't make weight and though he tried in the waning moments before the fight, he was still a little more than three pounds over the contracted weight.

While the defensively slick Guzman (28-0, 17 KO's) has looked very good against mediocre opposition, it should be noted that he hasn't scored a knockout since 2004. In a show of questionable heart, Guzman opted out of the fight...

Casamayor-Marquez: Postscript at an Intersection
THU September 11, CLIFF ROLD - 'It's weird...you know the end of something great is coming, but you want to hold on, just for one more second...just so it can hurt a little more.' ' Unknown

There is skepticism in the air for at least one of the big fights on tap this weekend. Oddly, it's the fight with the two biggest names, the two most likely future Hall of Fame entrants. The possibility of a bad style clash... [Link Takes You To BoxingScene.com]

Fifty Greatest Fighters Ever
WED September 10, JAMES STILLERMAN - After writing an article three months ago entitled, Mayweather Top Fifty, Not so Fast, which I wrote that while Mayweather was certainly a first ballot hall of famer he was not a top fifty fighter of all time, I decide to answer the question of who is among the top fifty fighters in boxing.

After careful and exhaustive research of hundreds of boxers throughout the last 150 years I settled upon the men...

Kirkland by Early Stoppage on ESPN FNF's
SAT September 6, FRANK GONZALEZ JR. - Friday night at the Austin Music Hall in Texas, exciting Jr. Middleweight prospect James Kirkland (23-0, 20 KO's) was on display against yet another little known fighter named Ricardo Cortes, who's record of 22-3-1, 15 KO's is on par with Kirkland's record (minus three loses). Cortes was coming off a first round KO loss to Alfredo Angulo in February....

Does This Tarnish The Gold On The Golden Boy?
WED September 3, BUSTER PARIS - Blood spattered from Miguel Cotto's face in ways that it never has before, and most likely, never will again. "Manny Pacquiao is considered the best fighter in boxing today and I always want to fight the best."
---Oscar De La Hoya

Margarito grins, sneers, and continues to pound away at one of boxing's finest and most skilled fighters...
