Diaz Impresses, Brock Wins on NBC

by Julius Stecker - Ringside
Fans at the De Paul Athletic Center were treated to an outstanding fight card on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Chicago, Illinois. It was televised on Telemundo and NBC and featured two former USA Olympic fighters in two separate fights. Jr. Welterweight David Diaz (24-0) was by far the most impressive fighter on the card. Diaz demonstrated great skill while dismantling the tough former WBO World Champ Ener Julio (25-7-1), scoring a spectacular 10th round TKO victory. In the feature fight, Calvin Brock (21-0) systematically broke down the hard-hitting Terry Smith (20-1-1) to win a unanimous decision by the scores of 96-94, 97-93,98-92.

On the Telemundo main event Chicago native David Diaz demonstrated and proved he now belongs in the Jr. Welterweight title picture. Many people felt the Ener Julio would give Diaz his toughest fight, but Diaz proved to be more then up for the battle.

From the outset, the southpaw Diaz dominated the action with an array of straight lefts and uppercuts that became his signature calling cards for the entire afternoon. The first 3 rounds were much of the same with Julio neglecting his height advantage and he stayed on the inside, which proved detrimental to his health.

Julio was always a step behind Diaz, and Diaz was capitalizing on Julio lethargic style at every wake and turn. Julio had his best round of the fight in the fourth, but from round five on it was much of the same.

In round six, Diaz knocked Julio down with a straight left that seemed to be a delayed reaction. From that point on it was only a matter of time before Julio would go. Julio proved game until round 10, that is when Diaz came out of his corner like a bat out of hell, and jumped on Julio. Diaz closed the show with style and gave Chicago fans what they wanted, a TKO victory in the last round.

Diaz's performance has now put him in the top ten of the Jr. Welterweight division; he beat two good opponents in his last two fights now, Emanuel Augustus and Ener Julio and a world title fight may be on the horizon for the ever-improving Diaz.

In the main event of the afternoon, Televised on NBC, Calvin Brock an undefeated Heavyweight prospect, proved he is a player in the ever-weak Heavyweight Division. In a fight that featured much of the same routine action, Brock out boxed a tough Terry Smith.

Brock in winning the bout, demonstrated a good jab along with good body punching, controlling the majority of the action. Smith had his moments but he waited too long at times to let his hands go, and that proved to be his downfall.

Brock will attest to be a sturdy opponent for any heavyweight out there. He is skilled, dangerous, and he has a good beard. While he needs more work, that will come in time. Brock probably is on an even plain with any other heavyweight prospect in boxing right now.

In other action:
Sergio Moya (12-0) beat Les Ralston (13-1) by unanimous decision, in a reasonable entertaining scrap. It was marred by a lot of lunging and reaching by both guys. Both light hitting fighters proved tough and satisfactory skilled, but both are still young and have a lot to work on. In my opinion the fight could have gone either way, but Moya fought well enough to win.

Undefeated Anthony Hanshaw (16-0), who is trained by James "Buster" Douglas, scored a victory over the shop worn Tyrus Armstrong (10-21-4) by 3rd round TKO.

Miguel Macho Hernandez (10-1) won a uniamous decision, over a tough Luis Lopez (5-5). Hernandez and Lopez traded shots in 6 entertaining rounds marked by Hernandez's superior talent. Hernandez continues to improve, and Lopez was great fight for him at this point in his career.

Luciano Perez, the Chicago native welterweight prospect remained undefeated at 8-0, looking impressive scoring a 1st round TKO victory over Manual Reyes.
