2/22 - WBC Continental America’s Cruiserweight champion Gary Gomez (13-4-0, 5KOs) knows that a war starts this coming Friday night in Tacoma Washington. Gary worked in the amateur ranks with over 300 battles until he launched his career into the professional game. Gary decided to fight in the cruiserweight division, even though he appears outside the physical make up. Gomez stands only 5’7”, and yet weights at 195 pounds.
He won a ten round decision over Chad Van Sickle for the belt in December 2004. Chad Van Sickle, who used to fight locally in the area for the promoter of the fight at the Emerald Queen Casino, hit the mat in the first and third rounds. Chad loomed over Gomez at 6’2”, and usual height/reach disadvantage for Gomez. Gomez dismantled the undefeated Northwest cruiserweight when he KO'd Michael Sams (then 12-0) in March of 2004.
Expect a tough fight for Gomez. Gomez plans to slow down the taller fighters with body blows, and his money punch is the left hook to the body. He might just paralyze his opponent with a single body blow, which you never recover from those shots. Watch for a fast break in the first round, and a blizzard of Mike Tyson punches to take down the challenger, banging body shots to the bones.
“I would like to thank Halquist Productions for the giving me the chance to fight for the fans of the great fighting state of Washington and I want to let the fans know that I’ll fight hard and give them what they came to see!” Gomez said. Gary Gomez dropped by a gym from a car show some years ago, and started fighting. His handlers look for him to push around the bigger men.
Northwest cruiserweight giant slayer, Gary Gomez (13-4-0, 5KOs) will face Rayco Saunders (14-3-1, 6KOs) in the 35th installment of the Battle at the Boat boxing series on a special Friday night edition, February 25 th, at the Emerald Queen Casino. The first action-packed bout is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. Gomez will face tough Pittsburgh cruiserweight Rayco Saunders (14-3-1, 6KOs). Rayco said, “Expect a war, a war is coming. Washington fans will see the boxing Gladiator chopping down the opposition. I’m working my way up the ladder and Gomez is just one rung on my way. I'm chasing' them all" said Saunders, "Gomez is just one in a long line..."
Rayco comes from the projects, and been in some street wars, fought in the streets since 15. Rayco fights for his children. At 5’11”, with reach advantage, he plans to show blinding speed in the ring, and early dominate the shorter man. Rayco works out many hours everyday in cross training. With Gomez ranked around 19th in the country, Rayco moving up fast at 26th, watch how the bodies fly and hit the mat.
Welterweight David Torres (7-0-0, 5KOs) plans to make a fast paced fight against Cesar Vega (6-4-0) from Louisville, Kentucky. David fights for his brother and sisters. With 20 amateur fights, he entered into the business with now an undefeated record.
He goes to church every Sunday with his family, and works on his professional career training hard in the gym the other days of the week. When he goes into a fight, you need to stand in front of him so that he can hear you. He shows great focus in the ring. With great speed and power, watch for this fighter turn from nice guy into a nasty mauler. Every fighter before wondered how to get this guy off him. Lalo Martinez, his manager and trainer, worked with many fighters over the years. Lalo helps the youth in the area of Spokane Washington, using his experience in the fight game to provide motivation to the kids.
David Torres beat two undefeated fighters (Derrick Moon, 3-0-1, and David Hernandez, 3-0-1) back to back. He’s the crowd favorite at the casino and is a local fighter. Lalo plans on fighting David eight more times this year. Lalo hopes to have David fighting a main event by summer.
The ever-popular women's bout brings back Boise native Beth Westover (1-1-0) to battle Arlington, Washington's own Cami Hostettler, who is making her pro-debut.
