Ruiz-McBride in Negotiations
TUE June 21, LUKE CHANCE - Could Kevin McBride be in line for a world title shot against newly reinstated WBA champ John Ruiz?
It certainly looks that way. Although at this stage both camps are cautious about specifics Ruiz’s camp have said that not only is the champ interested in the fight, but they have made their desire clear to McBride’s men. However. they also confirmed that things were still just in the ‘talking stage’.
McBride's camp were equally evasive when it came to specifics and insisted that nothing like a deal had been done. At the moment it seems that McBride, 33(28)-4-1, has been taking a little well deserved time off after the biggest win of his career. He will be back in the within the next few days and looking to fight again ‘in September or October’.
When asked about a possible fight with Ruiz, his camp said that McBride, "would love to fight for a world title." Moreover, they said that their man would be willing to take on all-comers provided that the money was right. That certainly includes Ruiz and his camp were emphatic that should the two meet their man would ‘knock him [Ruiz] out’.
It seems there is some serious interest from both sides. Ruiz, 41(28)-5-1, may see McBride as a easy defense, McBride may see Ruiz as a tarnished champion. All we can say for sure is that we can expect to see McBride again before the end of year, whether that will be fighting against Ruiz or not can only be speculated over. It may be a fight both sides would like, but that does not necessarily mean the politics of boxing won’t get in the way.
TalkingBoxing.com would like to thank both Anthony Cardinale and Packy Collins for their time.
