TalkingBoxing’s Weekend Roundup
TUE November 15, ROGER GORDILLO - Once again Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s about that time you caught up on all the details of this weekend’s results. Here are the results for this past Friday, November 11th and Saturday the 12th.

In a cruiserweight battle from Washington, D.C.

Shauna George (11-0-2, 5 KO’s) would win a unanimous decision against Chad Van Sickle (20-2-2, 12 KO’s) picking up Van Sickle’s NABA Cruiserweight Title in the process and defending his own IBC Americas strap. On the Undercard Tommy Brooks Trained Oscar Diaz improves to (23-1, 11 KO’s) by defeating David Toribio (12-2, 7 KO’s) via unanimous Decision by scores of 74-78, 72-79, 75-77.

Lazcano Mano a Mano at Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, Illinois

Former title challenger Juan Lazcano would go toe to toe with Courtney Burton as the two fighters would exchange in close quarters for the first half of the match. Although somewhat effective, Lazcano didn’t look at his peak, lacking mustard on his punches until he got some distance between himself and Burton, giving himself the much needed room for his long arms to throw good clean effective punches. Lazcano would drop Burton in the eighth and again in the ninth as Burton would go down in a corner and stay down for the full count. Would Lazcano decided to box and not just grind, he could have taken Burton out much quicker. On the undercard Featherweight Jose Hernandez (19-2, 13 KO’s) bested Armando Cordoba (21-20-1, 16 KO’s) by a unanimous decision of 95-94 and 96-93 twice.

Verde Looks Green from Civic Center, Kissimmee, Florida

Mexico’s Gerardo Verde (13-3, 10 KO’s) was coming off a loss, giving an impressive account of himself against the best minimum weight fighter around Ivan Calderon. Against Calderon, Verde looked over matched but applied pressure and had his moments, but hey it’s expected against someone of Calderon’s skill level. Tonight against Omar Soto (8-0-1, 4 KO’s), Verde looked downright amateurish and not as in amateur boxing, as Verde would just wing and throw punches wildly often in a windmill like fashion. Ironically, Gerardo Verde looked downright Verde [That’s green for all the Anglos out there]. Soto who himself is as Verde as it gets with just 8 wins and 1 draw, had a good showing of himself simply holding his hands up, boxing carefully and cautiously. Soto was mechanical, not very fluid, but what can you expect from a guy with 8 fights. It’s amazing what a simple jab can do especially when the other guy is a brawler with little defense.

Soto went on to win a unanimous decision by the scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 119-109. Keep an eye out for Soto, who spars with WBO Minimum Weight Champion Ivan Calderon. If Soto can get some rounds under his belt and get a little more fluid in his exchanges, he could look to challenge for a major title in a year or two as he is patient and calm picking his shots while working in the ring.

Saturday’s Action from Sporthalle, Hamburg, Germany

Oleg Maskaev (32-5, 25 KO’s) defeats Sinan Samil Sam (24-3, 15 KO’s) in a WBC Heavyweight Title Eliminator and in winning also secures himself Sam’s WBC International Heavyweight Title. Sam, a 3 to 1 favorite, was soft around the midwaist as he was thoroughly out boxed as he plodded forward while Maskaev would box using the jab to keep Sam at bay, setting up his shots. This now sets up a possible Maskaev-Hasim Rahman rematch as it will be decided in the near future what exactly will be Maskaev’s position as a mandatory for the now WBC champ Rahman. In their first bout, Rahman was on his way to a points victory, then a single Maskaev shot sent Rahman right out the ring in one of the greatest knockouts of recent time. So for now we will just have to wait and see what happens.

On the undercard, 2004 Super Heavyweight Gold Medalist Alexander Povetkin (4-0, 3 KO’s) won a four round decision over fellow Heavyweight Stephane Tessier (3-3, 1 KO).

From Wynn Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada

It’s nice that when I cancelled my room at the Wynn because of the fight being off that no one bothered to inform me that would still be putting on a small card in it’s place. That’s the boxing business for you, but enough bellyaching. Results for the card were as follows, middleweight Vanes Martirosyan improved to 6-0, 3 KO’s stopping Abdias Castillo (9-13-1, 7 KO’s) in the 5th. Heavyweight Yanqui Diaz (13-3, 8 KO’s) and Derek Berry (11-4-1, 5 KO’s) fought to a no contest as unintentional headbutt stopped the fight in the 1st round. Puerto Rican Heavyweight Victor Bisbal (4-0, 3 KO’s) picked up another win via 5th round TKO over Bridger Bercier (4-4, 2 KO’s). The Puerto Rican big man is managed by Evangelista Cotto, so we’ll probably see more of him in the future.
