Lacy-Calzaghe Better Than Tea and Crumpets
THU March 3, PHILLIP DIAZ -
Now before I get thousands of emails from the National Tea Lover’s association, let me retract that last statement. What I meant to say is that this is a pretty darn good fight. A fight that has lacked the hype and hoopla it deserves.
And while the world stood on pins and needles last week; well at least 400,000 homes stood on pins and needles; watching two fading warriors kick off there adios tour live from Las Vegas; simultaneously might I add. Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy was winding down weeks of preparation for what many in the sport have tabbed as an early candidate for fight of the year.
Lacy “21-0” is a throwback to the sports glory days, the days when fighters didn’t fight over purses. When champions did there talking in the ring, when phrases such as if it don’t make dollars it don’t make sense, only if the money is right, or never heard of him didn’t exist.
I mean would football be as popular if the super bowl were canceled because the money wasn’t right. What if there was no world series because the Yankees wanted 60-40. Oh yeah this just in, there will be no NBA Finals because the Pistons never heard of the Spurs.
But for everything wrong with the sport of boxing there are thousands of things (Jeff Lacy) right with sweet science. Fighter’s who are willing to not only talk the talk, but also walk the walk. And when I say walk I mean walk, half way across the world no less.
Well maybe not walk but Lacy is flying half way across the world to fight an undefeated fighter Joe Calzaghe in his own backyard in what figures to be hostile territory to say the least. I mean it wouldn’t surprise me if fight fans across the pond were already knocking back a couple of cold ones in preparation for Saturday’s fight; it’s rather ominous isn’t it.
My Prediction for this weekend is that there were be a unified champ in the supper middleweight division, and no it won’t be your average Joe.
