Boxing’s Most Valuable Secret EXPOSED!
MON July 31, BUSTER PARIS - On behalf of the team here at TalkingBoxing.com I have breaking boxing news – I have THE inside scoop that has never before been revealed. I have four words that will surely change our beloved sport forever. Four words that will cause a domino effect from World Champions to the 8-year-old kid holding a pair of mitts ... and a dream.

Keep Your Hands Up.

This secret piece of boxing foundational principle has never been released to the general public or to most boxers and I’m convinced that now that this knowledge is unearthed and exposed it will rip through our very souls like an uncontrollable wild fire and change the very course of boxing’s future.

I thank you in advance for my Pulitzer nomination and ... what ... it’s not a secret? – but... but ...

July 26th, 2 young and brand new professional prizefighters (Middleweights / 160 lbs) were facing each other at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York - and also on the even larger stage of ESPN’s Wednesday Night Fights – and one of the most valuable lessons in boxing was brutally taught and humbly learned.

William Prieto (5 foot 8 / 23 years old) came in with only 2 other professional bouts behind him. He had his first pro match on July 1st 2006 and his second was a week later - July 7th. He won both those fights by unanimous decision and had a record of 2 wins and 0 losses.

Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (6 foot 1 / 23 years old) entered the bout with a record of 5 wins and 0 losses. 4 of his wins came by way of knockout.

‘Ding’

Prieto came out in the Southpaw stance, he was moving well, bouncing and popping out the jab. After a few ticks of the clock he switched to an orthodox stance and was equally as effective in moving, bouncing and popping off the jab.

To be honest – I was incredibly impressed. A fight I’d normally watch out of the corner of my eye I was riveted to and excited about – here’s this 23 year old kid – his second pro bout and he’s moving smoothly, fluidly and incredibly has the precious gift of being able to switch back and forth (to and from) Southpaw … I love that! – Wow! - this kid is the future of the Middleweight divis…

2:09 – 51 seconds have passed since the opening bell and William is brazenly dancing somewhat like Muhammad Ali – he purposefully placed and allowed his hands to dangerously dangle down by his sides…

2:04 – 56 seconds have passed since the opening bell and Quillin nonchalantly and easily crushes the right side of Prieto’s head with a ginormous right hand and Prieto crashes to the canvas. He bravely tries to get on his feet, but Peter’s right hand has clearly scrambled William’s faculties and down he goes again. Referee Mike Ortega rightly waves it off and Quillin gets his 6th win – 5th by knockout.

What the hell was William Prieto thinking? – This kid is super talented and has this amazing natural ability – someone please tell me what the hell was he thinking?

I know he’s young. I know this was only his 3rd fight, but c’mon – how many times has it been said -- Protect yourself at all times – and KEEP YOUR HANDS UP.

Next week I uncover another of boxing’s trade secrets – I call it “punch the other guy” – so stay tuned.
