TalkingBoxing's Staff Picks for this Weekend
SAT August 5, STAFF -

Cliff “24kt” Rold
I'm truly pumped for this weekend. As someone who has been a fan of all the key players for some time, these are tough picks. I'll go with a split on Showtime; Juan Manuel with a decision victory and Mabuza with a late rounds knockout upset. On HBO, Powell, who I have followed since he won the U.S. Golden Gloves, is in a little over his head. Look for him to drop an educational decision to Ouma that makes him a better fighter long term. Forrest-Quartey...Ike was a favorite of mine for a long time and I look for a big win here. He's looked good lately and Vernon's injuries don't bode well for a long tough fight. Ike by late KO.

Both Marquez brothers will win. Rafael will win by KO. And Juan Manual will win by decision, in 2 non-eventful fights. Now the other card is much more promising. Give me Ouma by mid-round KO. Powell has been dropped before, and I think he is a tad-bit over-rated. In the main event I like The Viper, Vernon Forrest. I think he out-boxes Ike Quartey. Ike has fought better opposition lately, but I think Vernon is the smarter fighter.

Frank Gonzalez “Sharkie’s Machine”
I always liked Forrest but he is damaged goods at this point, so Quartey by decision and Ouma to win by TKO approximately by the 10th round over the still green, Sechew Powell. JMM beats Jandaeng by one sided decision and Rafael repeats up on Silence Mabuza.

Roger Gordillo
Ike wears down Forrest late for a TKO or close decision. Ouma just too rough for Powell, Ouma by UD. Juan Manuel makes Terdsak look like a Turdsack, Juan Manuel Marquez by UD. Rafael Marquez stops Silence mid to late rounds possibly on cuts.

Ike Quartey has not only fought the better opposition as of late but has done so his whole career. While we can’t say the same for Vernon what has been consistant with him has been injuries. I like Ike to be the stronger of the two and his jab will be the key to victory. I can see him stopping Forrest late.

On the undercard we have an excellent fight between Sechew Powell and Kasim Ouma. While Ouma has fought the better fighters I believe Powell is the better boxer. Look for Iron Horse to weather some shaky moments early and pull off a UD.

Gary Shaw has a card that features the Marquez Brothers on SHO. And believe me that is what it will be………….a showcase. I like Juan Manuel by mid round stoppage. While the tough Thai is Terdsak Jandaeng may be here to win, it will be Juan Manuel’s world class experience and supierior counter punching that will lead him to victory.

Co feature of the night will be the final defense of the IBF Bantamweight title for Rafael Marquez who will be facing Silence Mabuza in a rematch. While Mabuza did very little in terms of offensive to merit a rematch he has managed to climb the rankings in search of revenge. Yeah I know the first fight was stopped on a cut but the only thing Rafael can do to improve on that fight is to register a knockout this time. If he opens up we could be in for a exciting but short night. I expect Rafael to weather the storm early and display the accurate hard punching that has made him P4P one of the best in the world.
