Talking Boxing Staff Picks Wright -Vs- Taylor
SAT June 17 , STAFF -

Richard McManus: Taylor by UD

Wright/Taylor: Taylor’s fairly straight-ahead, upright style would seem made for a tough, slick southpaw like Wright. But Taylor is the younger, stronger man and the natural Middleweight, whereas Wright is 34, on the backside of 50 professional fights and has only been in the Middleweight division for 2 fights. I look for Taylor to use his size and strength to pressure Wright, much the way Fernando Vargas did in 1999. Wright will be forced to exchange at times just to win rounds but if Taylor can make the correct adjustments he should have enough to pull it out. I'm going with Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor to pull out the close but decisive unanimous decision win on Saturday night.

Buster Paris: Wright by Decision

Wright/Taylor: At one point - for me - this was easy -- Winky Wright by Unanimous Decision -- But that was before Jermain Taylor walked into the Kronk Gym ... and Emmanuel Stewart. Taylor has been very amateurish his last couple of times out and Wright would have eaten that up, but now those 3 little words change everything -- The Kronk Gym. I'm still going to go with Winky winning by decision, but it's going to be close and Winky's gonna take a beatin' and resemble Diego Corrales after Corrales/Castillo I. Look for Taylor's skills to be much improved and look for Wright to remain very disciplined - but - all that goes out the window from round 10 on -- Jermain will revert back to being somewhat sloppy and Winky will scrap and brawl. Winky wins - decision.

Frank Gonzalez Jr: Wright by Decision

Wright/Taylor: I like Wright to win by Decision. Taylor will have some improvements but not enough to out box the more efficient boxer, Winky Wright.

Cliff Rold: Taylor by KO 10

Wright/Taylor: Wright is a better fighter now than when he fought JC Vasquez but not as good as he was when he fought Vargas. Taylor is definitely in the 'getting better' mode, making this the best type of crossroads fight. The things Vasquez did to drop Wright five times, using height to bring his right down over the high Wright guard, will help Taylor here. His looping overhand right and left hook follow up are sloppy but ingrained. If Steward has refined his footwork even a little, that combo will land behind and over the Wright defense. Early it might not matter; late it will accumulate. Taylor is bigger, faster and hits a ton. He doesn't know what Winky does skill-wise, but youth prevails. Taylor KO 10.

Jason Peck: Wright by Decision

Wright/Taylor: No way that Taylor's desire to stay on top matches Wright's desire to make the top. Wright's at the top of his game now, and I see him choosing his shots well to walk off with a decision. Wright W12 Taylor.

Julius Stecker: Taylor by UD

Wright/Taylor: I am taking Taylor by UD.  Wright will have his moments, and will control the action in some rounds.  But Taylor's activity and power will carry him to a close but unanimous decision.

Jerry "JC" Casarez: Wright by UD

Wright/Taylor: While Taylor is seen to be the bigger and younger man coming into this fight it is Winky who I feel will be the more physical of the two men. The key to victory will be Winky's inside fighting more so than his Southpaw style. While this may start off as a chess match it will soon break into a real fight. It is in Taylor's best interest to keep this fight on the outside where he can try to use his new found tools that Manny Steward has worked on but 6 weeks is not enough time to completely change a man's style. Taylor is a one two type guy but when he finishes this sequence he always looks to clinch. This is where Winky will make him pay. Expect a competitive fight but at the end of the night when the cards are tallied the clear cut winner will be the man they call Winky.
