Talking Boxing Staff Picks Rahman/Toney
FRI March 17, STAFF -
Richard McManus: Rahman by TKO
Rahman/Toney: Rahman's sheer size, strength and legit heavyweight experience should be enough here to give Toney his first loss since Drake Thadzi in 1997. Toney should have some moments inside but in the end Rahman will wear him down. My head and heart say Toney, but my gut says Rahman. Prediction: Rahman by late stoppage
Roger Gordillo: Toney by UD
Rahman/Toney: Love him or leave him James Toney is one of the best technicians of his era and despite facing a big disadvantage in size and reach against Rahman Toney is head and shoulders above "The Rock" in ring saviness. After being let down time and time again by Rahman promises and work ethic it's hard to back the bigger stronger man in this one. Unless Rahman lands the lotterry punch he did against Lewis Look for toney to school Rahman over twelve rounds on his way to a unanimous decision and unifying the Heavyweight Title.
Buster Paris: Toney by Decision
Rahman/Toney: I’m actually excited about this fight between James Toney and Hasim Rahman. I’m psyched to see two of the big boys slugging it out. Looking at this months Ring Magazine’s cover – “Who Needs The Heavy Weights?” and you can’t help but agree – the division is in sad shape and the lower weights are packed with some amazing talent and some of the best fighters I’ve seen in a long time…but I long for “that” Heavyweight – the top dog – the “Baddest Man on the Planet”. But -- there is one great thing about the Heavyweights right now – and that’s James “Lights Out” Toney. For this fight there are two big questions:Which Rahman will show up? And - can Toney take a big punch? I think regardless of which Rahman shows up that James Toney will win – most likely by decision. Toney’s one of the most talented fighters out there right now. Got that old school offense and defense – and while he’s never faced the type of power that Hasim has I think he’ll be just fine. I think he has a good chin and he’s very hard to hit.Toney by decision.
Jason Herron: Toney by UD
Lacy/Calzaghe: This is going to be an old fashioned slug fest. James Toney has the better chin, while Hasim Rahman possesses the stronger punch. I believe it would take a sledge hammer to drop Toney. It will go all twelve. Toney by unanimous decision.
Jerry Casarez: Toney by Decision
Rahman/Toney: Anytime you put James in the ring with any Heavyweight the result will be the same.. James simply has too many punches and moves in his repertoire for even a motivated and in shape Rahman. I see James winning this fight by using his advantages where they count..and that's his inside fighting. Name one other Heavyweight that fights in the pocket while constantly slipping punches and when he makes you miss he'll make you pay. Rahman's only chance is landing something big and hoping he gets lucky. And after years of seeing Toney train with Heavyweights, I can't say I've ever seen him hurt let alone hit flush.
Jason Peck: Toney by Decision
Rahman/Toney: The outcome depends on whether or not Toney can finally get himself into shape. Rahman is a naturally bigger guy, but if Toney brings superior speed to the fight, then size won't matter. Rahman is a C+ fighter, whom Fortune saved when Vitali retired. He's beaten the Kali Meehan fighters of the world, but fallen short against the Lennox Lewis fighters. I say he comes up short against James Toney. James Toney W12 Hasim Rahman.
