Jones and his Legendary Status

by Brad Cooney
Ok, Ok. I have been out of pocket for a little over a month, but now I am back to the pages of TalkingBoxing. During my departure from writing, I still have been keeping an eye on boxing from the corner of my eye. With the defeat of Roy Jones Jr., here comes the Monday morning quarter-backing.

The thousands of Roy Jones fans walking around with heads held down, and depressed facial expressions. Jones was beaten fair and square by Antonio Tarver on May 15th at the Mandalay Bay.

You may not have to like Tarver, but even will all of his talk and cocky attitude, the guy backs it up. An empire or king soon tires, and falls. Roy Jones has already sealed his fate in Boxing's legendary status books. He will go down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest pound for pound boxer of all time.

I do have a message for Mr Tarver... feel free to maintain that championship level for a decade, obtain a Heavyweight Title, mix in a few more titles after that and do so with class for awhile before you jump on the "I am the greatest" train.

Roy Jones Jr. has done a lot for the game of boxing and he does a lot for people outside of the game as well. Jones has been a class act champion fighter for many years, and deserves the respect due him.

Tarver deserves respect as well... for beating the greatest pound for pound fighter in the game. The other kind of respect comes in time, and only if earned. Tarver is a hell of a fighter, with talent off of the scale. I offer a big Congrats to Tarver for a great win over Roy Jones. So what's next for Roy Jones Jr? Time will tell that. I for one hope that Roy Jones continues to fight [which he has said he will]. I feel he has more in him, and I am not yet convinced that he is done.

Will Roy Jones dominate the game like he once has? Propably not. Can he still fight, and be competitive? Yeah no doubt, in fact do not count the guy out just yet.
