Is 154 a step in the right direction for this natural disaster?

by Phillip Diaz
9/10 - Two natural disasters are headed towards Puerto Rico this weekend, a Hurricane by the name of Ivan and a fighter named Antonio. Hurricanes are measured in categories from one to five, one being smallest and least destructive. As of today Hurricane Ivan is a category four, by definition a very strong Hurricane. At 154, former WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito is every bit a category four, his record speaks for itself.

Margarito sports a 30-3 record and is undefeated in his last 22 fights with a one no contest. His last loss was over eight years ago back in June of 96' and has never been stopped, having only three defeats all by decision. Since his last defeat, Margarito has been on a path of destruction. In his last 17 fights, 14 have ended by either TKO or KO, that's pretty destructive, but than again that was at 147. This Saturday, Margarito will challange WBO jr. middleweight champion Daniel Santos, live on HBO from Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in Puerto Rico.

Did Margarito make the right decision by vacating a rather thin 147-pound division and moving up seven pounds to a much deeper 154-pound division?

At 147 you have Undisputed champ Cory Spinks, Zab Judah, Vernon Forrest and a very green Kermit Cintron. Aside from that, it's a who's who of 'has beens' (see Miguel Angel Gonzalez) and never were's (see Margarito's last opponent Hercules Kyvelos). Not a very deep or talent latent division, but a very complicated one none the least.

Getting Don King and Bob Arum to agree on anything requires a lot of money and a lot of patience, money is something Margarito vs Spinks probably wouldn't bring, at least at this point and patience is something the 26-year old Warrior doesn't have.

Jr. middleweight on the other hand, is stacked with talent as there are many directions Margarito can go from here assuming for a moment, he wins. A possible unification match up against the November 13th winner of Shane Mosley-Winky Wright or a potential fight of the year candidate against the IBF champion Verno Phillips versus #1 ranked Kassim Ouma winner.

Those are just a couple of options. But perhaps even more appealing is a possible move up to 160 and as a Pirate would say "there lies me treasure", not gold but lot's of money. With the likes Of Bernard Hopkins, the 'Golden Boy' Oscar De la Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Ricardo Mayorga, maybe even Fernando Vargas, there are lots of fights and money to made for the 26-year-old rising star and it's all only 6 pounds away.

First things first, Margarito has to prove he's still a very powerful force at 154. Like a Hurricane, will Margarito become stronger as he becomes bigger? Or will he be downgraded to just another Tropical Storm that becomes more and more irrelevant over time? This Saturday should go along way to answering that and many more questions. So lets hope that Ivan doesn't make it too the island and Margarito does with only destruction on his mind!
