Superman vs The Magic Man
A preview of Jones-Tarver II

by Jason Herron
Roy Jones, Jr. has been called "Reluctant Roy" by some of the boxing media for the better part of the last decade. Instead of battling deserving challengers such as Bernard Hopkins and Dariusz Michalczewski, Jones was criticized for taking on human punching bags like Richard Frazier and Clinton Woods. Saturday night, "Reluctant Roy" will change his reputation forever, when the Ring Magazine champion grants a rematch to the legitimate number one light heavyweight contender, Antonio Tarver.

Their first fight was as close it gets. Jones, boxing's pond-for-pound king, was coming back down to the 175 pound limit, after having vanquished John Ruiz at heavyweight in his previous fight. Jones looked drained from the opening bell. Losing fifteen pounds of muscle had taken its toll.

Tarver took advantage, fighting the best twelve rounds of his career. Many in attendance thought "The Magic Man" had done enough to get the nod. The judges thought differently, giving Jones the majority decision.

Tarver, (21-2 with 17 KO's), vows not to let the judges have a say in the outcome this time. Giving boxing's "Superman" all he could handle has given Tarver the confidence he needs to pull off the historic upset. Look for Tarver to take the fight to Jones from the get-go.

Jones, (49-1 with 38 KO's), has his sights set on the big names in the biggest division of all. All that stands in his way is Tarver. A Jones victory could set-up some monumental fights with Mike Tyson or the Ring Magazine heavyweight champion, Vitali Klitschko.

Jones knows an impressive win over his in-state nemesis (both fighters reside in Florida) will erase all doubts from their first encounter.

Montell Griffin knows what a motivated Jones is capable of. After being disqualified in their first fight, Jones decimated Griffin in less than two minutes in the rematch.

All indications point to Jones and Tarver putting on quite a show. Boxing fans around the world hope the first major pay-per-view fight of the year lives up to the hype.

Prediction: Think of this as an exact replica of Jones-Griffin II. Jones wins in dramatic style and leaves the light heavyweight division in spectacular fashion. Jones by first round knockout!

Jason's prediction record in 2004: 6-1.

Roy Jones, Jr.-Antonio Tarver II can be seen this Saturday night on HBO's Pay-Per-View. The card begins at 9 pm.
