Boxing Back in Green Bay in a Big Way
by

11/11 - Green Bay, Wisconsin is the home of some of the most loyal and
dynamic sports fans in the United States. The Green Bay Packers
captivate
the attention of the city, 24 hours a day, and 365 days a year. Heck,
there
is a waiting list of over 30 years for season tickets to Packer games
on
Sunday's. But the Minnesota Vikings coming to town won't be the only
thing
on sports fans minds this weekend. Reason being "Big Time" boxing is
back in
the city by the bay.
Top Rank Inc, in association with Telefutura are bringing in an action
packed night of boxing. The card will feature, former heavyweight title
challenger Vaughn Bean (44-4), taking on one of Top Rank's "Top"
heavyweight
prospects Yanqui Diaz (12-1).
Diaz is coming of a shocking knockout win over former Cruiserweight
World
Champion and at the time WBC #1 heavyweight contender Juan Carlos
Gomez.
This particular night at the fights will be taking place at the
outstanding
Resch Center, this Friday, November 12th, and it will be televised on
the
cable network Telefutura. Also featured on the fight card is local
favorite
son, Carlos Molina (3-1). Talkingboxing.com caught up with one of the
fight
organizers, Al King, a Green Bay native, to get his take on the
upcoming
fight card.
"We have had boxing in Green Bay for a while now. We haven't had
anything
quite the caliber of this fight card but we have had boxing here.
Eventually, if everything goes well, we would like to do something with
ESPN
or HBO in the future," said King.
Local radio stations have been a buzz about the card for weeks, and all
the
VIP tables are already sold out. And with all the excitement, there is
a
local element involved as well.
Green Bay native, Super Welterweight prospect Carlos Molina will be
looking
to steal the show. He himself has generated a great deal of local
interest
in the card and King had nothing but high praise for the young
electrifying
prospect.
"He is an excellent fighter, he is still young but he is dedicated, and
he
has fine trainers. I think it is going to take 10 or 15 fights before
we
know how good he can be, but he has all the mechanics and the right
attitude
to make it work," said King.
Green Bay is not known as a big fight town. But it is looking for
November
12th to be the kind of night; that can generate the interest needed to
make
Boxing a mainstay in the future.
"There has definitely been a buzz in Green Bay. There is an interest in
these fights. But you have to remember Green Bay has a great boxing
history,
we have had a lot of great golden glove matches in the past, and there
have
been a lot of good fighters to come out of this area," said King.
The Telefutura card promises to be a big night for Midwest boxing, and
it
promises to be a big night for the home of the Green Bay Packers.
