In the digital age we all live in, you would think that the game of baseball might be headed for extinction. After all, we all expect to be able to Google anything in a matter of seconds, cook a microwave dinner in two minutes and reach anyone instantly by cell phone. But perhaps that’s exactly why baseball has never been more popular and why nearly 76 million Major League Baseball tickets were sold during the 2006 season. With its leisurely pace and no time constraints, taking in a baseball game can be a welcome relief from the fast-paced rat race.

And no sport has such a rich and vibrant history. The roots of the sport are still subject to considerable debate, as the old legend about Abner Doubleday inventing the game in Cooperstown, New York (where the Baseball Hall of Fame sits) is not generally accepted anymore. But it seems likely that the sport, at least at a professional level, originated sometime around 1850. And while there were championship games in the 1800s, the first to be labeled as the “World Series” took place in 1903 with the Boston Americans, led by Cy Young, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates by a tally of 5-3 in a best-of-nine series. The event proved to be a hit, with more than 100,000 World Series tickets sold.

Baseball continued to grow in popularly through the early 1900s, when legendary pitchers like Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson battled the likes of Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. Baseball later provided a diversion from The Great Depression and Babe Ruth become a hero to kids everywhere. With the advent of radio and later TV, baseball truly became the American pastime. Young boys, and many young girls, spent their childhoods buying baseball cards at the corner store and saving up their allowance to get baseball tickets on the weekend. It became a tradition for a father and son to buy some baseball tickets and enjoy an afternoon at the ballpark, and that has been passed down from generation to generation and lives on to this day.

No sport celebrates its history as much as baseball. Its classic records, like Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak or Ted Williams .406 season, are known even to non-baseball fans. So if you need a little break from the hectic schedule of everyday life, or just want an excuse to skip a day of work, maybe it’s time to go out and get some baseball tickets and take in a ballgame.
