A True Fighter: Freddie Cuevas

by Julius Stecker
In the sweet science we call prize fighting, we look for fighters who captivate the audience with their athleticism, toughness, skill, and their ring grace. Often times we forget about a thing we call professionalism, a guy who goes about his job, gives his best effort every time he fights and a guy who will never allow the outside worlds opinion to effect their own. One of these guys is Freddie Cuevas (21-5-1), a junior middleweight from Chicago, Illinois. He is fighting this Friday night on ESPN2 against the renowned former Olympian, Middleweight Jermain Taylor.

Cuevas is not phased at all by the daunting challenge of fighting a bigger more athletic fighter, he explains himself by saying, "People who doubt me don't know a thing about boxing, most people who say I have no chance have never even put on a pair of gloves." That is a very logical and educated answer, you see Freddie Cuevas may not be the most talented fighter in the world, but he is not a bum by any means at all. He has knocked out former world champion Charles Murray and he also knocked out perennial contender Wilfredo Rivera, yeah that Wilfredo Rivera, the one who almost knocked out Fernando Vargas, the same guy who gave Shane Mosley all he could handle, and the same guy who some feel beat Pernell Whitaker. Also Cuevas has never been knocked out. So if Jermain Taylor wins it will be against a legitimate and a very real opponent.

In my conversion with Cuevas, I found him to be cool, calm and collected, he is very focused on winning, he stated, "I have the upper hand in experience, I have been in with better fighters, I also have some punching power, when you look across the ring I may not look that strong, but I have strong legs and any real boxing person knows that your legs is where your power is generated from." Cuevas is determined and focused and hopefully a good showing on Friday will lead to a big money fight for him, and maybe a cross town showdown with fellow Chicago junior middleweight contender Angel Hernandez (interview), he said this about him winning on Friday, "If I win it, I will shock the world, but not the people close to me, they know what I can do and what I am capable of." I happen to agree with that assessment, I am not saying he will win the fight on Friday, but you can never doubt a guy like Freddie Cuevas, he is a true fighter through and through, a worker, a warrior, a fighter, a guy who you can never count out.
