Former champ, ROBERT DANIELS
Julius Stecker: How is training going right now?
Robert Daniels: Training is going great, I am ready to go
Julius Stecker: Who is your opponent going to be this Friday, Dec 5th?
Robert Daniels: It was supposed to be Guillermo Jones, but now I believe it is Jamir Barnes. While I can't say I know him personally, I have seen tape of him. It really does not matter though, because I am fully prepared.
Julius Stecker: If you had your way who would you like to fight, would a James Toney fight be appealling?
Robert Daniels: Oh yes I am definitely looking for a James Toney fight, he has called me out a few times in the past and I say let's do it. His promoter Dan Goosen is a smart guy, he realizes that a fight with me is high risk and little reward, but I am definitely interested in a James Toney fight.
Julius Stecker: Robert, you are a former world champion with an excellent record, but you barely ever hear your name mentioned in boxing circles, does this ever discourage you at all?
Robert Daniels: I get discouraged sometimes yes, but I really don't let that kind of stuff get to me. People who know me, know I can fight. I know I can fight, and boxing people know I can fight. It has just been circumstances that have not allowed me to be marketed correctly. I just signed a deal with Warrior Boxing and hopefully that will lead to a big money fight in the future.
Julius Stecker: Tell us about Robert Daniels outside of boxing?
Robert Daniels: My church and my family is my main priority. I keep my life in perspective. I am not looking to be a big celebrity or anything like that. If it happens then so be it, but I believe God has a plan for all of us.
Julius Stecker: You mentioned you are very involved in the church, do you do any other community work?
Robert Daniels: I am an assistant to my minister, and I train young amateur fighters and teach them the benefits of boxing.
Julius Stecker: What is your opinion on the recent news that ESPN is not going to pay promoters anymore when they televise fights?
Robert Daniels: Julius, I really don't get involved with that kind of stuff. I am a fighter, I just fight, so I really do not know a whole lot about it. To me it seems as if it is going to hurt fighters purses, but like I said I really don't know too much about it.
Julius Stecker: In closing, what can we expect from Robert Daniels over the next few years?
Robert Daniels: Definitely, I am going to be a better more improved fighter. With the new weight limit now at 200, I will not have to worry about weight as much. I won't have to sweat down and lose 10-15 pounds just to make weight anymore. As most people know you are not as effective when you have to drain yourself to make weight. I am going to be the best cruiseweight in the world. And hopefully James Toney will step up to the plate as well. He called me on my cell phone a few times and said what he was going to do to me, but I don't let that get to me. Overall expect to see Robert Daniels at his best.
TalkingBoxing would really like to thank Robert Daniels for taking time out of his busy training schedule to talk with us. We wish him the best of luck on December 5th!
