With 6 more planned fights in 2003, middleweight prospect Willie "The Gladiator" Gibbs (14-0) plans on staying extra sharp "to become a world champion within the next few years." Gibbs, who regularly spars with his cousin Bernard Hopkins, has an upcoming fight on August 9th in Boston versus a "TBA". Gibbs has already fought 4 times this year with 2 wins coming by way of KO (11 career KO's in 14 wins), but Gibbs describes himself as a "nice puncher, a boxer puncher who sets guys up." With a 94-10 amatuer record and a 14-0 record as a pro, look for Gibbs to be making some noise at 160. TalkingBoxing.com's Julius Stecker caught up with Gibbs.

      Willie Gibbs

Julius Stecker: Willie when is your next fight going to take place?

Willie Gibbs: Next fight is going to be August 9th in Boston, MA, I don't know who my opponent is going to be.

Julius Stecker: A lot of people outside of your area don't know a lot about Willie Gibbs, tell our readers what you bring to the table?

Willie Gibbs: A nice boxing style, an agressive fighter, versatile boxer puncher, real nice style, the total package.

Julius Stecker: Of your 14 fights, you have 11's, but would you consider yourself a KO artist?

Willie Gibbs: I would describe myself as a nice puncher, a boxer puncher who sets guys up.

Julius Stecker: How many more times do you plan on fighting this next year?

Willie Gibbs: 6 mores times, I plan on being 20-0 within the next year.

Julius Stecker: Tell us a little about your Amateur background?

Willie Gibbs: I was silver medalist at the Olympic Trails twice, I had a 94-10 record and had 26 KO's, as you know it is harder to get KO's in the Amateurs, so I feel my style is more suited for the pros anyways, but I had a very outstanding amateur career overall.

Julius Stecker: You come from Philiadelphia, a very historic fight city, does it mean something to you to carry on that great tradition?

Willie Gibbs: It does mean a whole lot to me, because I represent where I'm from and I am proud to represent where I'm from.

Julius Stecker: I read that you are the cousin of Bernard Hopkins, and spar with him regularly, how much does that experience with him help you as a fighter?

Willie Gibbs: It helps me out a whole lot, it helps me be more instinctive, plus being in there with the best, and Bernard is the best, and I know I won't be in with anybody better... it only will help me make it to the next level.

Julius Stecker: What world class fighters have sparred with?

Willie Gibbs: I sparred with Charles Brewer in the late 90's, and have been in with numerous other world class fighters, Jermain Taylor offered to spar with me, but I declined, I know we will be meeting one day so I did not think it would be right, to spar with him at that time, even though we are friends, boxing is a business, and I plan on meeting him one day in the ring.

Julius Stecker: Who do you like watching fight?

Willie Gibbs: James Toney and Bernard Hopkins, and somewhat Evander Holyfield but he needs to retire. Hopkins and Toney bring that style in there that you don't see anymore, I remember those old Toney fights back in the early 90's they were something. Hopkins, man he is something too, I also respect Roy Jones Jr, he is the best around, I respect his gifts.

Julius Stecker: Despite your excellent record do you feel the boxing world is not giving you the respect they are giving fighters like Jermain Taylor and or Jeff Lacy?

Willie Gibbs: Somewhat, but you know what patience is a virtue pretty soon they will see I am the real deal too. Little by little it will happen, from this interview to much bigger things.

Julius Stecker: What should boxing fans expect from Willie Gibbs over the next few years?

Willie Gibbs: Expect me to improve and be a world champion.

TalkingBoxing.com would like to thank Willie Gibbs for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with us and we will be rooting for a big win on August 9th in Boston.
