Heart of a Prospect: Al "Speedy" Gonzales

"I want Francisco Bojado or Miguel Cotto."

by Julius Stecker
On July 18 of this year in Chicago, Illinois. Chi-town native and junior Welterweight prospect, Al "Speedy" Gonzales showed the world and himself what any fighter is able to accomplish with a lot heart and a whole lot of perseverance. You see in this fight Gonzales had to overcome what most average fighters can only dream of achieving, it was not a world title or anything tangible. It was something that came from his heart and his soul. What he did do was get off the canvas from a crushing first round knockdown, against Johnny West Gutierrez. And to top it off he also fought the fight from the second round on with a busted jaw, and get this, he won the fight. Not bad for a nights work.

What he proved in that fight is that any man who is willing to get in the ring with him better beware, because this man has the heart of a lion. Gonzales is not stopping there, he told me, "I want Francisco Bojado or Miguel Cotto." Gonzales confidence breeds itself in his tone of voice, he no doubt feels like he belongs in the same ring with those two more highly touted prospects, and who can blame his thought process. He is 12-0, 7 KO's and he is only 22 years old and not even close to the prime of his career.

Gonzales describes his fighting style as, "A slugger, a smart boxer, who can go to war if I have too." Those are the styles fight fans like to watch, and with the heart and passion he demonstrated in his last fight, a fight with Francisco Bojado has the makings of an exciting fight. So when Gonzales jaw is healed in December give him a tune up and then lets see him and Bojado go at it, it would be good for the sport to see two young tigers go to battle and engage in a high stakes prospect fight. It would be a throwback of sorts, back to a time when prospects were not protected. And who knows maybe if they do fight, fans could be treated to a barn burner, and how often do those happen in now in boxing. Gonzales closed out his conversation with me by stating, "Expect me to be a world champion." If he can repeat his heart filled performance on July 18th, he could indeed live up to his own expectations.
