Interview with DERRICK HARMON

by Julius Stecker
Having fought his whole career at light-heavyweight, Derrick Harmon (23-4) makes a transition to the cruiserweight division tonight on Friday Night Fights against the WBC #1 ranked O'Neil Bell. Harmon is "stronger than ever" at his new weight and "definitely can't go back down to 175" which could be a problem for the current crop of title holders. Harmon has been in with the best of the 175 pounders and would like to take that world-class experience into the ring against former IBF champ Vissilly Jirov and although he is friends with current WBC champ Wayne Braithwaite, Harmon wants a world title and even his close friendship wouldn't stand in the way. Harmon is energized and ready for his main event clash tonight, a fight you dont want to miss. TalkingBoxing's Julius Stecker caught up with Derrick to talk about his upcoming fight.

DERRICK HARMON

Julius Stecker: How did training go Derrick?

Derrick Harmon: Great I feel stronger then ever

Julius Stecker: Do you feel the move to cruiserweight will help you as a fighter?

Derrick Harmon: Like I said, I am stronger then ever, my energy, my hand speed is a lot better. I definitely can't go back down to 175. It hurt me to lose 8 pounds to make weight in Germany against Michalczwski, so I will be staying at cruiserweight in the future as well.

Julius Stecker: How does it feel to be back in your home area, being from Evanston, IL?

Derrick Harmon: It feels good to be back, to see some familar faces, but when I am in the ring it really won't matter, because it will be just me and Bell.

Julius Stecker: What do you know about O'Neil Bell?

Derrick Harmon: I know he is a strong guy, he has knocked out like 19 guys, but he does not have the experience that I have. I have been in with guys like Roy Jones Jr., Dariuz Michalczewski, and Montell Griffin, so I believe he won't bring anything I have not seen before.

Julius Stecker: If you win would you be willing to fight Wayne Braithewaite?

Derrick Harmon: Me and Wayne are friends, in fact he called to wish me good luck in the fight tommorow. I have sparred with him in the past, like before my fight with Michalczewski. If I had to pick, I would really like to fight Jirov, that is a guy I would really like to fight. But I want to fight for world titles, so if I had to fight Braithwaite I would. Afterwards we would probably go out to dinner together.

Julius Stecker: What are your keys to victory against Bell?

Derrick Harmon: My energy and my hand speed will be the keys to victory, and my boxing ability.

Julius Stecker: You are involved in something very special, it involves helping to find missing children, can you eloborate on that for us?

Derrick Harmon: I have been working in helping to find missing children and I am a board member of the particular organization I am involved in currently. When I am on television and even when I am not, I use myself to promote the cause of helping to find these missing children.

Looking at television in general, and all these politicians are willing to spend 50 million dollars on a war against Iraq, but they are not doing anything to help with childrens education or to find missing children. These children are our future and a lot of our leaders fail to realize that.

Julius Stecker: In closing Derrick what can we expect from you on Friday?

Derrick Harmon: You can expect a sharp performance, a sharp good performance.

TalkingBoxing would like to thank Derrick Harmon for taking some time out his busy schedule and training to do this interview. Best of luck on December 19th on Friday Night Fights!.
