Interview with JEFF LACY
"I could fight amongst any of the top 10 guys at this point"

by Luke Callahan
With only 15 professional fights under his belt and three titles, how has top super-middleweight Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy attained such a high level? "I learn quick," says the 26-year old, St. Petersburg, Florida native, who fights December 13th on Showtime. "I feel like I could fight amongst any of the top 10 guys at this point." Lacy has his sights set on WBO champ Joe Calzaghe regardless if he goes up to 175. "I do consider him the best champion at 168 pounds. I would like to fight Calzaghe because of that reason. I know the fans would want to see that," said Lacy and with his quick progression, this bout maybe be only a handful of fights away! TalkingBoxing caught up with Lacy after a workout for his upcoming fight.

Top Super-Middleweight, Jeff Lacy

TalkingBoxing: How are things going?

Jeff Lacy: Things are going really well man. Just resting after my workout.

TalkingBoxing: Going back to your last fight, how do you think you did against Grant?

Jeff Lacy: That was a tough fight, I mean I dropped him twice, but when you end up in there with a guy who doesn't want to fight, it's really hard to look good against him.

TalkingBoxing: I watched the fight and you did fight well, but he didn't engage much?

Jeff Lacy: Well when he did engage, that was the first round and I dropped him. After that he didn't want any.

TalkingBoxing: What have you been working on differently for (Donell) Wiggins?

Jeff Lacy: I have been working on stance and working my jab more. I have been losing focus in the later, second half of the fight and that's what we have been going back too. That's what were are working on a lot.

TalkingBoxing: Is he the best compettion you will have faced? I know you haven't fought him yet, but on paper this must be your biggest challange?

Jeff Lacy: I feel like, you know I am getting tested in different areas. This is a big test as far as strength and endurance. He is phyiscally strong and he is a bigger fighter. He is a 175 pounder and I am geing tested in a lot different ways. I feel like this is another test for me.

TalkingBoxing: You fought early in your career overseas, what's the reason for going over there this time?

Jeff Lacy: Basically what we are doing is we are just trying to gather the attention because we got all foreign champions in my weight class. We are trying to get as much attention as we can. We are trying to get that foreign audience.

TalkingBoxing: You think you are ready for a title shot soon?

Jeff Lacy: Most definately. I think the year 2004 will see me get a chance at fighting for one of those major titles.

TalkingBoxing: You only have 15 fights so far, it's remarkable what you could do.

Jeff Lacy: Yea. I mean I have come along way in a short time. 15 fights with three different titles...I learn quick. I feel like I could fight amongst any of the top 10 guys at this point.

TalkingBoxing: What do you think about Calzaghe going up to 175?

Jeff Lacy: Well you know he is still the champ. He is only going up a weight class. There is still a chance that he could dominate the 175 pounders you know. That's the reason I would like to be in there with him. I do consider him the best champion at 168 pounds. I would like to fight Calzaghe because of that reason. I know the fans would want to see that.

TalkingBoxing: Regardless if he is at 175?

Jeff Lacy: Exactly!

TalkingBoxing: What champions are you targeting?

Jeff Lacy: It doesn't matter. I will work with any of those guys that are willing to take the fight. You know what I am saying. It doesn't matter which title that we go for. Which ever fighter wants to step up and say I will give you the shot.

TalkingBoxing: It doesn't matter if it's overseas?

Jeff Lacy: It doesn't matter if it's overseas. As long as TV is there.

TalkingBoxing: Showtime

Jeff Lacy: Exactly.

TalkingBoxing: Any final thoughts on the fight?

Jeff Lacy: Like I said, 2004 year is going to be my biggest year for me. I think I will be getting one of those title shots and I will be holding one of those titles by the end of the next year. That's a gaurentee.

TalkingBoxing: The first time I saw you fight live was back in 2002 against Glenn Thomas at Mohegan Sun. That was a big fight and you ended it fast with a first round KO against a top fighter with only a few fights.

Jeff Lacy: I remember that one fight mainly because that was I think, what I would consider one of my real tests. I looked at it because of who he had fought and who his losses were to. Also, he was one of the guys that campaigned at light heavyweight and I looked at it like he fought Roy Jones and Jones knocked him out in 8 rounds. All his losses were to top 10 opponents, when he did lose. It took more and more competition when I know I had to get up for a guy. That really raised my level of competition. Like I said if I am getting in the ring with a guy that one minute doesn't want to fight and the next minute they do. It's really hard to stay focused on that type of fight. And that guy (Thomas), he kept me focused in training and inside the ring. What happened is I hit that guy with a hard shot and it happened instantly (broke Thomas' rib). The audience wasn't really there to see it up close in person.

TalkingBoxing would really like to thank Jeff Lacy for taking some time out of his busy day to talk with us. We wish him the best of luck on December 13th!
