One Tough Guy: Rocky Martinez

Martinez will be fighting this Friday in Chicago

by Julius Stecker
Toughness is a quality that some people lack, but in prize fighting toughness is a necessity. Some guys are just tougher then others. They have the ability to deal with a broken nose, a cut eye, or a sprained wrist and they still manage to fight on because they know no other way. Some fighters exemplify what the word toughness is all about. One of these guys is Chicago native, Junior Welterweight fighter Rocky Martinez. Rocky Martinez, will be a featured fighter on this Friday's September 26th fight card in Chicago, at the De Paul Athletic Center.

Rocky Martinez will never be mistaken for Shane Mosley as far as skills and athleticism go, and by some accounts is considered a stepping stone fighter for up and coming contenders nowadays, but one will never deny his heart and his toughness. Those particular qualities make Martinez a fighter who is always worth watching. For those who don't know how tough Rocky Martinez is just look at the guys he has fought, Miguel Cotto, Paul Spadafora, Artur Grigorian, Randall Bailey, Joey Gamache, and Philip Holiday, and that is just naming a few of the quality opponents he has been in the ring with. While he has never beaten any of those aforementioned opponents, he never gave less then his best and tested each one of his opponents resolve. In a recent interview with talkingboxing.com Martinez stated, "Training is going good, with my weight is hovering around 141-140." Martinez is coming off a loss to dynamite prospect Miguel Cotto, by 2nd Round Kayo. Martinez though seemed in good spirits and focused on his opponent this Friday, "I don't know who I am fighting this week, but I am in shape and ready to go."

Personally, I like guys like Martinez, they always give their best and what they don't have in talent or skill they make up for it with the will to succeed and to me that is a special human quality that needs to be written about, but sometimes is overlooked in some circles. Martinez promises to bring his best on September 26th and he can only hope that it will be good enough to once again put his name on that list of fighters who will get a another world title shot or a big money fight.
