Interview with WAYNE McCULLOUGH

by Luke Callahan
Top featherweight Wayne "The Pocket Rocket" McCullough (26-4) feels great and is "enjoying boxing again" after a tough loss in March to WBO champ, Scott Harrison. The former WBC bantamweight champ wants big fights in 2004 and it looks like he could be back in the ring as early as February. With his determination and granite chin, McCullough has the goal of becoming 2-time champion. "I would love to win at least one more Championship," said McCullough, "but if I don't, I will have no regrets." McCullough has taken on the era's best, such as Erik Morales, Naseem Hamed and Yasuei Yakushiji, but he would love to add Paulie Ayala, the Ring super bantamweight champion, to his win column. McCullough said, "Cheryl has spoken to Bob Arum and they are as interested in that fight as we are. I don't know if it will happen but it seems both Paulie and I would like it to." Read on for more on Wayne McCullough.

Top Featherweight, Wayne McCullough

TalkingBoxing: How is everything going and how do you feel?

Wayne McCullough: I feel great. My body is well rested after my last fight in March and I have been in the gym enjoying boxing again.

TalkingBoxing: The Harrison fight was at featherweight, a fight in which he was much heavier than you, do you plan on staying there or coming back down to jr. featherweight?

Wayne McCullough: I plan on fighting someone my own weight from now on! I was not outweighed by much when I fought Hamed, but Harrison was totally different. I will campaign at whichever weight I get the opportunity for the big fights.

TalkingBoxing: Going back to the Harrison fight, what can you take away from that fight that can help you in future fights?

Wayne McCullough: Never go into a fight ill!

TalkingBoxing: Are there any fights currently in the works?

Wayne McCullough: My manager, Cheryl, has been talking to a few promoters trying to line something up for me. I will be in the ring by February.

TalkingBoxing: Frank Warren said he wants you to take a low-key warm up fight before going for another title, do you agree with him and if a title shot were to present itself, would you take that fight?

Wayne McCullough: I have now parted ways from Warren. It was very amicable and we may work together in the future. While I understand his concern about me having a low-key fight, no-one knows what I was like before the Harrison fight and that was a major problem for me. However, I don't make excuses and would rather just accept the defeat.

TalkingBoxing: A few months ago there was talks that a Paulie Ayala fight could be made, anything new as far as that possible fight?

Wayne McCullough: Cheryl has spoken to Bob Arum and they are as interested in that fight as we are. I don't know if it will happen but it seems both Paulie and I would like it to.

TalkingBoxing: What is your time table to get another shot at a title and do you feel any pressure of getting a 2nd world title?

Wayne McCullough: I have achieved everything I wanted to in boxing. I would love to win at least one more Championship, but if I don't I will have no regrets. Obviously I would like to win another title early next year but we will see what happens.

TalkingBoxing: Is there a champion out there that you have targeted and would want to challenge?

Wayne McCullough: Right now I would like to fight Ayala but the obvious choice would also be Pacquaio. If Hamed came out of hiding, I'd take him on again - but that's unlikely on his part.

TalkingBoxing: I read that you have an interest in song writing and would like to do work on television outside of the ring, what's the scoop?

Wayne McCullough: Cheryl is the singer but I have been trying my hand at it too. I like to sing but TV work is more interesting for me. I presented a documentary for BBC Northern Ireland and it got tremendous ratings. I would love to work as a boxing commentator too. If anything opens up I will definitely have a go!!

TalkingBoxing: What can you see yourself doing when you hang up the gloves? Training?

Wayne McCullough: Training has always been something I wanted to do when I retire. I am hoping to open up my own gym and train some fighters - both amateurs and pros. I would also like to be able to do the TV thing as well.

TalkingBoxing: Anything you would like to add in closing?

Wayne McCullough: I would like to thank my fans for standing by me through my career. I will be back, better than ever and I hope to have many more memorable fights.

TalkingBoxing would like to thank Wayne McCullough and his wife Cheryl McCullough for taking time out their busy schedules to do this interview. We wish you the best of luck in your quest for another world title!.
