Interview with Irish Micky Ward, former WBU jr. welterweight champ

by Julius Stecker
TalkingBoxing's Julius Stecker caught up with "Irish" Micky Ward for a few minutes to talk about life after boxing. Ward will always have a special place in the hearts of boxing fans for displaying some of the greatest courage seen in his trilogy with Arturo Gatti. Since retiring from boxing, he is "taking some time off", but is having some troubles with double vision. From all of us at TalkingBoxing, we hope your vision improves and we hope you enjoy the good life of retirement!

Interview with Micky Ward, former WBU jr. welterweight champ

Julius Stecker: How is everything going right now Micky?

MW: Fine, everything is going fine.

JS: What do you plan on doing right now that you have retired from prize fighing?

MW: Taking some time off, I have double vision in my right eye right now, so I just want to take some time off.

JS: You are one of the greatest action fighters in boxing history, but what was your greatest moment as a fighter?

MW: I don't know, but if I had to pick I would say beating Shea Neary in England, to me that was a great accomplishment.

JS: How does it make you feel to know that you are having a tribute this coming friday in your honor?

MW: It is a great honor, it makes me feel real good.

JS: Do you see yourself being a trainer or a manager?

MW: No, not right now, I want to get away from everything, maybe in the future I will help train young kids and help them out, but not right now.

JS: Are you in favor of a union for fighters and or a retirement fund for fighters?

MW: Yes definitely, because a lot a guys get beat up and they have nothing to fall back on, not everybody makes the money that a good Heavyweight makes, so yes definitely.

JS: Do you think what you have done in your career will get you into the Boxing Hall of Fame?

MW: I really don't think about that, but it would be a great honor, but I realize that they are other great fighters still waiting to get in.

JS: How do you want boxing fans to remember you as a fighter and as a person?

MW: A fighter who gave it his all, everytime out.

TalkingBoxing.com would like to thank Micky for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with us! Thanks for all the memories!
