With excellent amateur experience, an 18-1 professional record and what he deemed himself having, "intestinal fortitude", DaVarryl Williamson goes into hostile territory in Buffalo for his upcoming clash with Joe Mesi on September 27th. Williamson doesn't seemed phased one bit from the expected 18,000 fans rooting on their hometown boy, "Baby" Joe Mesi at the HBSC Arena. "The more energy he gets, will be the more energy I get" said Williamson. TalkingBoxing's Julius Stecker spoke with DaVarryl about his last fight with a broken jaw (suffered against Robert Wiggins earlier this year) and his preperation for his upcoming fight among other things.

DaVarryl Williamson

Julius Stecker: How is training going right now?

DaVarryl Williamson: It is going very good

Julius Stecker: Do you think that you have the momentum going into this fight, especially coming off a great performance, a fight you broke your jaw in?

DaVarryl Williamson: I think surviving the broken jaw and winning impressively really will take me to next level. Everybody wants to know if a fighter can survive with a cut over his eye, a broken jaw, a knockdown or whatever, I proved I can reach back in that reserve tank, and I showed the intestinal fortitude to overcome such adversity.

Julius Stecker: You are going into hostile territory on September 27th in Buffalo, upwards of 18,000 fans going against you, how are you going to handle this?

DaVarryl Williamson: I going to feed off it Julius, the more energy he gets will be the more energy I get, but this is nothing new to me, I fought and beat Robert Wiggins in his hometown before.

Julius Stecker: Are you familar with Joe Mesi and his style as a fighter?

DaVarryl Williamson: I am very familar with him, we have sparred over 50 rounds or so, I know everything about him even what size shoes his wears.

Julius Stecker: Do you think Mesi's chin, given the fact that it has never been tested, play into your favor?

DaVarryl Williamson: It has been tested, I seen him hit by a guy at the Olympic Trials, Lawrence Clay Bey, and he knocked him flat on his face, and that was with 12 ounce gloves and head gear. I would just like God to bless us both to have a great fight, but I am going to be victorious.

Julius Stecker: Getting away from boxing a little, you have a masters degree, so why do you continue to box?

DaVarryl Williamson: Well, there are somethings in life that you happen to be good at and boxing happens to be one of those particular things, also it is very lucrative. People in genaral go through school, high school, and college and so on to put themselves in a better position to make a living for their families, and boxing right now gives me a great oppurtnity to help my family and puts us in better situation.

Julius Stecker: What is your masters degree in?

DaVarryl Williamson: Adminstrative Services, which ties into Political Science to some degree

Julius Stecker: Do you do any community or charity work?

DaVarryl Williamson: I am not afiliated with any charity or community group, but I personally work with disadvantaged youth, teaching them boxing and various other life skills. I also try to help out with minority youth by serving as a role model they can look at as an example of some one who was in a similar situation and who is now making it.

Julius Stecker: What kind of timeline are you looking at in your quest to become the Heavyweight Champion of thw World?

DaVarryl Williamson: Right now I am trying to cultivate a relationship with HBO, because I know I give fights fans what they want to see, which is knockouts. In society people love seeing that sort of thing, whether it be a car wreck, or whatever, I believe I provide that rush that people need with my fighting style. As far a fighter I am looking to fight, I would like to fight a Chris Byrd or a Roy Jones Jr, after the Mesi fight.

Julius Stecker: Where did you get the nickname "Touch of Sleep" from?

DaVarryl Williamson: My good friend Lawrence Clay Bey gave me the name, a guy I sparred over 400 rounds with, but it was back in 1995, when "Touch of Sleep" came about. I was knocking people with my right hand and my left hand, and Lawrence said, you hands are the "Touch of Sleep" and it has stuck ever since.

Julius Stecker: Do you plan on putting the Touch of Sleep on Joe Mesi?

DaVarryl Williamson: I would say so, I am looking for a fair fight as far as judging goes, but I plan on bringing my own judge and jury, my left and right hand.

Julius Stecker: What can boxing fans expect from you over the next year or two?

DaVarryl Williamson: Expect an honorable man, who is family orientated, and I will always give my very best, and I will always fight my heart out. If you looking for more from "Touch of Sleep" check out my website www.tosboxing.com, I have a great team behind me, so expect the very best.

TalkingBoxing.com would like to thank DaVarryl Williamson for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with us and we will be rooting for a big win on September 27th on HBO.
