Interview with Winky Wright

"I want Shane, De la Hoya and Vargas"

by Luke Callahan
TalkingBoxing caught up with IBF junior middleweight champion, Winky Wright for a quick interview before his PPV showdown with Angel Hernandez. Wright desperately wants a fight with the "big" players of his division. "I want Shane, De la Hoya and Vargas," said Wright with a tone of annoyance in his voice that these three weren't stepping to the plate. "If none of these fighters step up, I will move up to 160 to fight Bernard Hopkins." Lets hope Hopkins will give this skilled champion a shot, but first up is the tough Angel Hernandez on Nov. 8th.

Interview with IBF champ, Winky Wright

TalkingBoxing: How are things Winky? How is training going?

Winky Wright: Things are going really, really good man. I just trained early this morning.

TalkingBoxing: What do you know about Angel Hernandez?

Winky Wright: Not much. I know he is a straight forward fighter. A pressure fighter, who was trying to fight for the #1 ranking a while back. I know he fought Candelo and Ouma and lost.

TalkingBoxing: After the Hernandez fight, who do you want?

Winky Wright: Man, I want Shane, De la Hoya and Vargas. At first Shane said he would fight me. I am not even angry anymore. If none of these fighters step up, I will move up to 160 to fight Bernard Hopkins.

TalkingBoxing: Do you think you will ever a get a shot at Shane Mosley?

Winky Wright: He said he would, but I am not waiting.

TalkingBoxing: Daniel Santos told us that he would give you $100,000 from his own purse if you were to fight him...What's your take on that?

Winky Wright: I don't even know the dude. I have never spoke with him or anything so I am not trying to disrespect him. I have never seen him fight. He don't mean nothing to me. Man I got almost 50 fights, what do I want to fight him for? They don't recognize the WBO belt anyways. Even when I had it they didn't recognize it. I got the other piece (IBF). I want names on my record when I retire. People say I beat Santos, so what, I was supposed to. Let me tell you, once I get some meaningful fights, I will beat Daniel Santos. If I fight him, I will give him an ass whipping.

TalkingBoxing: Why are you being avoided by the major fighters at 154 and 160, what's going on? why do you thank its this way?

Winky Wright: I am an all-around good fighter that's why, but the big names want a one dimensional fighter, so they can train one way and make it easy in the fight. They have to train extra for me, I can mix it up inside and can box them from the outside. I am tired of fighting the rest. I am fighting my #1 contenders. Right now I don't have a #1 contender, but I am taking on a good fighter.

TalkingBoxing: Anything in closing?

Winky Wright: Just like to say what up to Roy Jones Jr., thanks for your support. Thanks you all for you support. Just keep supporting me.

TalkingBoxing would like to thank Winky Wright for taking the time out of his busy day to talk with us. We wish him the best of luck in his next fight!
