Talking Boxing with CHARLES BREWER
"Veit shouldn't even be holding that interm belt!"

by Santiago Rodriguez
Former IBF champion and still major contender at 168-lbs, Charles Brewer is without a fight at the moment. Brewer, 40-9, is hoping that promoter Lou DiBella calls soon for a title shot, but isn't holding his breath. Since dropping a tough decision loss to WBO champ Joe Calzaghe in 2002, Brewer, who is currently ranked #1 in the WBO, has won three straight and finds himself knocking on the champs door once again. However, politics are playing big role in confusing the situation. "Calzaghe was to move up in weight, but decided not to. I was suppose to fight the #2 contender for the vacant title, Mario Veit, but now Calzaghe has decided to stay at 168 and defend," said the Philadelphia native. Brewer remains positive, letting the 'politics' work its way out. Until then, Brewer will continue to win.

CHARLES "The Hachet" BREWER

Santiago Rodriguez: What's new Charles?

Charles Brewer: Well, I'm still rated #1 [in the WBO]. I'm unsure who I am to be fighting. Joe Calzaghe was to move up in weight, but decided not to. I was suppose to fight the #2 contender for the vacant title, Mario Veit, but now Calzaghe has decided to stay at 168 and defend. Veit is holding an interm belt, which shouldn't count because they are saying Calzaghe isn't ready to defend. He don't have to fight his mandatory for some time out now.

Santiago Rodriguez: When is your next fight and who will you be facing?

Charles Brewer: I don't know this. What I mean is there are a lot of politics going on right now. I mean [Mario] Veit [current WBO interim champ] shouldn't even be holding that interm belt! Calzaghe was unable to fight due to injury. This is much like the Tszyu deal here when Mitchell won the interm belt.

When you think of the Super-Middleweight division there are really no big money names out there today. I mean not in the U.S and they have Calzaghe as if he is some star over there. I will tell you what, I get more respect from fight fans in Europe than Joe. The people love me over there. Every time I go, they show respect for me because of the way I fight.

Then there is [Syd] Vanderpool and [Jeff] Lacy Who get to fight for the Vacant IBF title how did that happen who is he? When is the last time you seen Syd?

Santiago Rodriguez: Hopkins I think.

Charles Brewer: And his performance there was garbage he couldn't do anything with Hopkins, yet he gets a title shot before I do? I mean how did that happen? Then there are a few more names like [Antwon] Echols, who I was suppose to fight. Then King had a contract with him and some dispute came about. Finally they came back with another deal but the purse was nothing so I said the hell with it.

Santiago Rodriguez: A lot of fans including myself have wanted to know if and when we will get to see a re-match between you and Scott Pemberton?

Charles Brewer: Oh I will fight Scott. I will blow him out of the water this time. He is not on the same planet, not anywhere near the same level as me. I allowed that fight to be more interesting than it was. I am not making excuses just that night he made a game effort and I allowed him to this time I will blow him out.

He has a belt one that I once had. I will take that from him wear it a little bit and get my world title. It don't matter, but right now I am just staying on hold for a moment.

Santiago Rodriguez: Now I have spoke with Scott several times and he has told me he would love to have a re-match with you. What do you think about a re-match with Scott?

Charles Brewer: You see Scott is one of them guys that I will take after I win a title as an optional fight. He deserves it. He has worked hard through his career, but he better bring his 'A' Game because I will mop him up.

Santiago Rodriguez: You're a Philly fighter correct?

Charles Brewer: Yes.

Santiago Rodriguez: In light of Bernard Hopkins and Antonio Tarver calling each other out, would you be willing to fight Bernard should he decide to move up in weight? Sort of like an all-Philly Showdown?

Charles Brewer: I worked with Tarver in preparation for the Jones re-match. We sparred nearly 100 rounds and there was a lot of give and take. Tarver's size would be the difference and his power if they did fight.

We both know the fight between Hopkins and I will be difficult on both sides of the fence his tuff guy image wouldn't apply here in Philly. It would be a fight. If you thought Gatti and Ward was a fight you aint seen nothing. This would be all out War.

Santiago Rodriguez: Who would you like to fight? I mean who is on top of your list as of right now?

Charles Brewer: For the money, now it's not about proving yourself. We have already done that, you talk about Toney, Hopkins and Tarver. You already know what your dealing with. It's all about dollars and cents as far as that is concerned.

Right now I am just waiting for the 'politics' to play out, then we will see what is going to happen.

Santiago Rodriguez: What can fight fans expect next time we see you?

Charles Brewer: I have no idea. If all goes well, I will get a call from DiBella saying we have the title fight.

Santiago Rodriguez: Thanks again for your time

Charles Brewer: Thank you!

Final thoughts

Today in the sport of boxing, fight fans pay out of their pockets to see good, action packed fights and with the Heavyweight division wide open, we look to the lower weight classes to find our fix.

How often do we look forward to a Super Middleweight bout? What big names ring a bell?

The first two names that come to mind are Charles Brewer and Scott Pemberton. I think it's time for Brewer to get his due against Joe Calzaghe, but I also believe that fans would love to see the re-match between Brewer and Pemberton [Brewer won by TKO in the first fight]. It's BAD material that's for sure. Titles don't mean much to fans in this day in age. It's what the fighters themselves bring to the table and both Brewer and Pemberton have much to bring should they fight again.
