Macho threw some nice combinations throughout the fight, and mixed in some crisp jabs. I didn't see the snap in Camacho's punches of old, but look, the guy is 40 plus years old. I did however see a guy that came into the fight in good shape, and it showed as he went 10 rounds with a much younger fighter in McNeil.
McNeil, a local from Meridian, MS showed a lot of heart. He was quoted as saying before the fight, "I have wanted to fight Camacho ever since I was 8 years-old."
All in all, not a bad outing at all for the former champ. Hector Camacho at 40 plus years old showed that he can still box at his age, and do so without looking like a has been. Before the fight, I had an opportunity to talk briefly with Welterweight Contender Hector Camacho Junior... I asked Hector what he was up to as of late...
Top Contender Hector Camacho Jr.
Brad Cooney: Hector.. it's nice to meet you.. what have you been up to lately?
Hector Camacho Jr. I have been training for my next fight, I am doing good.
Brad Cooney: Hector, do you have an opponent named yet, and when are you looking at getting back into the ring for this next fight?
Hector Camacho Jr. I don't have an opponent yet, we are looking at possible opponents...but nothing firm yet.
Brad Cooney: Hector, when do you plan on fighting next?
Hector Camacho Jr. I am looking at possibly fighting this coming September.
Brad Cooney: Hector, I know you are busy right now with your dad's fight.. thanks for talking to me.
Hector Camacho Jr. No problem, I will be in Mississippi training for the next 5 weeks, we can talk more soon.
Look for more MACHO time from Camacho Sr. in the near future as he is making a serious comeback attempt. A side note from myself to my boxing readers, I would like it to be known how impressed I was with Camacho Jr. The kid was extremely approachable, very kind and warm towards all of the boxing fans at the Casino. "Junior" was approached by many fans and he made time for all of them, shaking hands and taking pictures with as many as he could. My hats off to the young man.
