Kenny Ellis: Looking to Make a Name For Himself

by Julius Stecker
The 'Emerald City Assassin', Kenny Ellis (33-5-2) has been working his whole career to make a name for himself. The Seattle, Washington native has beaten some good fighters in his 14 year career and he has lost to a few good fighters as well. This Friday night, June 11th on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Ellis takes on Troy Rowlund (18-1) in the main event that will go along way to see where he fits in the middleweight division. The venerable Middleweight contender, who is promoted by Brian Halquist, caught up with Talkingboxing.com for a quick interview in the middle of an intense training session, to share his views on the upcoming fight.

Ellis explained, "Right now I am extremely focused on Rowlund and nothing else." Ellis, who will be headed into hostile territory in Rowland's hometown, is focused on the task at hand.

Ellis is coming off perhaps the most important victory of his career so far, avenging his loss to Darrell Woods (20-8) with a vicious 11th round knockout back this April. In his last 3 fights, Ellis is 3-0 winning all three by knockout.

In his previous bout before the string of knockouts, he was defeated by the highly touted Kingsley Ikeke, in a fight that was virtually even before it had to go to the scorecards due to a cut on Kenny's nose. Needless to say, Kenny was not award the decision, but he was not discouraged in the least.

"I would like to fight Ikeke again, but if you look at my career right now, how is that fight going to benefit me. This is a business, and business always comes first."

With all the hoopla from this past weekend's middleweight festivities, Kenny also offered his two cents as to who he felt won the Oscar De La Hoya-Felix Sturm fight. "De La Hoya did not win that fight. Sturm won that fight."

In closing Kenny explained that he feels now is his time. "You know what, I am going to show people something that has been hid for along time. I have been hid for a while. Now people will get to see Kenny Ellis." Hopefully for Kenny, seeing is believing!
