Hernandez is excited about his upcoming fight against Tsurkan saying, "everything is going good right now. I am focused on Tsurkan, he is a pretty aggressive fighter who was an amateur world champion and he only has 2 loses as a professional on his record."
Hernandez's career boxing career has consisted of many ups and downs, and right now he is on the up with a huge opportuinty coming up on June 15th against Tsurskan. Also on tap, Hernandez is focusing on an opportunity to become part of the new upcoming NBC reality series 'The Contender', hosted by Sylvester Stallone and Sugar Ray Leonard. It is going to be NBC's attempt to bring every American a ringside seat, so they can see the realities of prize fighting. NBC is going to be paying out a prize of one million dollars to the winner of the series.
Fernando, whose life somewhat embodies the Rocky story and then some, is throwing his proverbial hat into the tryouts to see if he can be America's first 'Contender'.
He explained, "They are holding tryouts in 15-16 major U.S. cities, so there are going to be tons of guys trying out for it. You can't be a former world champion, or ever have been rated in the top 5 in the world. I am the NABA Jr. Middleweight champion, so I am right on the border and with me being a skilled left-handed fighter, and all, I really have not gotten the right breaks in the past."
Fernando's versatility also has allowed for him to be a very successful and sought after personal trainer and business could not be going any better. He even gets a chance to train the world famous R&B superstar singer, R. Kelly, calling Kelly, "a good guy, he is good for people." Fernando is hoping for continued success with Kelly and many of his other clients.
It does not stop there with his others endeavors; he is also an aspiring rapper slash musician and after his fight career is over, he may be able to make a name for himself in the hip-hop industry.
"It all started with poetry back in my teenage years, true stories and diaries. Later it evolved into making them into songs. Right now I don't have anything out for sale, just a few demos. Maybe in the future it can be something I do full time. But right now my focus is in the boxing ring."
Focused and determined are the words that Fernando echoed the entire interview; and he believes that his newfound concentration will carry him to success in all his future undertakings.
"In the past I was a weekend warrior, right now I am in the best shape of my life. Now I am training twice a day, and boxing is the focal point in my life. I have learned greatly from all my losses, and I have come to embody the phrase, that what does not kill you, only makes you stronger. I have persevered and I have beaten guys like Frankie Randall, faster then anybody ever has. I also beat Epifanio Mendoza, so people better believe I am coming serious."
