Willie Gibbs: Boxing's "Other" Middleweight Contender
"The Gladiator" catches up with TalkingBoxing

by Julius Stecker
Don't forget about the 28 year-old Philadelphia native, Willie "The Gladiator" Gibbs (17-0). While various boxing scribes are already anointing Jermain Taylor, the next great middleweight. Gibbs is working out in the intense Philadelphia gyms in relative anonymity, going through intense sparring and knocking guys outs in the process.

While Gibbs does not have the fanfare, the financial backing of a big promoter, an Olympic Medal and the backing of a major cable network, he does have the skill needed to be a champion. Yet with all of those elements working against him, Gibbs just continues to plug away and win impressively each time out.

Gibbs continues to work roofing houses and buildings on the side, and he believes that one day he will get his chance at the opportunity to be a recognized name fighter in the near future.

TalkingBoxing.com caught up with Boxing's "other" middleweight prospect to get his take on his career and much more.

Gibbs explained, "I believe in 3 more fights I will be ready for a title shot. I am looking to fight top ten guys. I have a fight on August 27th, so I am hoping that is a big fight."

Gibbs, who is promoted by Cappiello Promotions, a New-England based promotional outfit, is an excellent boxer with very good power, and fight fans are starting to take notice.

In his last fight against veteran fighter Giorbis Barthelemy, he scored a crushing 6th round TKO, which increased his knockout total to 14.

Gibbs, who had a very good amateur career, did not make the 2000 Olympic team. He has had to work from the bottom up, but he is making the most of his opportunities. He explains, "Marvin Hagler had to work his way up to the top. I believe it will be that much better when I climb the ladder to the top."

When asked about Jermain Taylor, Gibbs gave his counterpart respect, but he expects that one-day they will meet. "I believe Jermain is a good fighter, but I really believe in my abilities and I am hoping that I one day get him inside the ring. I am hoping that somebody is willing to make that fight."

All roads to the Middleweight crown go through Willie's cousin, Bernard Hopkins and Willie is hoping one day he gets a shot at his cousin. "He is great fighter, and has always been there for me, he says he has 4 more fights left, so maybe we can keep the title in the family and he can fight me in his last fight."

If Willie continues to win impressively, a big fight with Taylor may one day be on the horizon for the young Gibbs.

In closing, Willie had this to say to the boxing public, "I am looking forward to fighting and stepping up and taking on top 10 guys. Maybe Jermain Taylor... I am a full-fledged middleweight and I fight full-fledged middleweights. But I fight for the fans; I want to give the fans what they want. And that is fight I think fans would want."
