Marty Jakubowski: One Tough Veteran
by Julius Stecker
11/16 - Marty Jakubowski, 112-7, is the definition of a
journeyman having been around the block and then
some. He is a guy who is willing to lace up the
gloves, anytime and anyplace. He won over a 100
fights, he has fought the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez,
and he became one of the most popular fighters on the
Midwest fighting circuit in the process.
TalkingBoxing.com caught up with Jakubowski to get his
feelings on his upcoming fight on Friday November
19th, at the Radisson Star Plaza, in Merrilville,
Indiana.
"A title shot is not something I am shooting for. I
just like to go out there and I like to compete,"
explained Jakubowski. Marty has fought for world
titles in different weight classes on numerous
occasions, but each time he came up on the short end.
But he did win 112 fights, and even though some of
those wins were against the same guys, 112 wins are
112 wins.
When asked about his record, Jakubowski was
not impressed as others "You can throw those records
out the window. I am in just in there to compete,"
said Marty.
A shining moment for Marty had to come back in
December of 1992, when he got in ring against the
legendary Julio Cesar Chavez. "I was a 23 year old
kid. My biggest payday up to that date was $1,000,
and they offered me $25,000. I did not want to be one
of those guys who thought about what could have been.
I went in there and I gave my best against the best in
the world," stated Jakubowski.
Marty currently fights for One in a Million Inc, and
he is quite pleased with the working relationship he
has with the popular Midwestern promotional company.
"They have been really good to me. They have been
straight forward and honest."
Marty will be looking to put on a good show for all
paying customers on Nov 19th, and in his own words,
"The first couple rounds I going to go out there and
make him miss. Then I am going get in my rhythm. If
I can’t beat a slow white guy from the Midwest, then I
should probably retire."
