"The Mountain" catches up with TalkingBoxing

Cruiserweight contender Rich LaMontange (28-5) has not fought since August of 2003, when he lost a decisive decision on ESPN2 to the respected Dale Brown. Rich has taken time off and has now regrouped, focused on his return to the ring against Chicago based knockout artist Chris Thomas (14-4), at the Belvedere in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. The fight will be a part of an ESPN2 Tuesday Night Fight card that will be featuring Omar Sheika in its main event. TalkingBoxing.com caught up with La Montagne to get his take on his career on and his upcoming fight on Tuesday.

The Everett, Massachusetts native explained, "Training is going alright, just winding down now, I took this fight on relatively short notice...I don't know anything about my opponent, except that he's tough."

Rich, who is known for exciting style and punching power, is looking to put his name back in the Cruiserweight mix and he believes his time is now to make it big in boxing.

"I am going to show everybody that I am a world class fighter, I am a legitimate contender. My last fight was a bad night; I think after this fight I will be right back in the mix for world title. I want to win the world Cruiserweight title."

LaMontagne's strong chin and will to win lead him to a victory over former 2000 Olympian Michael Bennett in 2002, a fight of which he scored an 11th round TKO victory, the fight was voted Ring Magazine's 'best cruiserweight fight of that year'.

Rich is also remembered for his spirited effort against former champion Vassily Jirov back in 1998. When asked about a rematch against Jirov he stated, "I would love a rematch, but he is a heavyweight now and I am a cruiserweight. I don't want to bulk up right now to get up to heavyweight."

While LaMontagne is respected prizefighter, he is also a highly sought after model. He does work for some modeling giants, namely Versacci and Calvin Klein. He explained, "I was in the right place and the right time, they liked my look. They allow me to do it in between fights. It does not interfere with my boxing, when I am in training, I don't do any modeling jobs. I just use it as supplemental income in between fights."

Modeling will be the last thing on Rich's mind this Tuesday.

He said to his fans, "Expect bigger and better things from me. I am going to bring my right hand and my left hook. I am going to out there and back up my talk. I am going in there to hurt him, and hope for a knockout. But if it goes the distance that is ok, I am to focused on winning."
