Interview with HICKLET LAU
"I have nothing to prove anymore, everyone knows I am a warrior!"

by Luke Callahan
Times are a changin' for boxing's best short notice fighter and highly talented welterweight, Hicklet Lau. At 28-years of age and numerous wars with some of the best in boxing, Lau has now decided to change his strategy. "I have made the mistake in the past of fighting top fighters on short notice." The lion-hearted Lau continued, "It's the fighter in me that hates to say no to such opportunities, BUT I will only take fights from now on only if I feel I am well prepared for the fight that is offered to me." In his most recent fight, a well prepared Lau scored a 5th round DQ win overformer title challanger Freddy Cruz, a fight he was winning easily until the referee had saw enough. "I was wearing him down with my jabs, and body shots. I dont think he was gonna last until the end, but the referee thought he had seen enough and decided to stop the fight." Read on for more as Lau opens up to TalkingBoxing.com.

Hicklet Lau: Things are going great for me right now. I just got a promotion and raise at work, which I am very proud of. I am also happy to be in the winning column again. I feel great in my new weight class. After viewing my performance against [Kermit] Cintron, I was inspired to maintain in that weight class. Watching him outclass the other welterweights in the division has inspired me to go up and stay fighting in his division. May I mention I was weighing 141-lbs when I was called for his fight last December [to fight Cintron]. I am a bigger man physically and am anxious to be in the ring with big names in this new weight.

TalkingBoxing: What are your fight plans after your big win over Freddy Cruz and what weight will you be fighting at?

Hicklet Lau: As for my plan at this new weight class is to continue to win and to make better choices of who I will fight and time given to me in advance and where I fight, including the temperture of where i fight [laughs as it was an outdoor fight in the upper 30's]. I was really disturbed at the way the press was hating on me on the Cintron fight. I felt I fought a good fight as I have done my entire carreer. I take nothing away from Cintron he did what he had to do, and perhaps one day we can do it again, but there was no need for writers to try to dog me out They will not take my pride and honor away by saying what they said. Hicklet Lau is going nowhere but up no matter what they say!

TalkingBoxing: Last Friday, what happened in the Cruz fight? It was stopped because Cruz was holding and for a lack of aggression...What went down?

Hicklet Lau: Well I did what I could do to stop this guy. Freddy is an experienced fighter and knew his power was no match for me, so he decided to hold and cover up the entire fight. I was wearing him down with my jabs, and body shots. I dont think he was gonna last until the end, but the referee thought he had seen enough and decided to stop the fight. At that time the referee took my job away and into his own hands to stop the fight. I have nothing to say after that.

TalkingBoxing: Being that you are still young and very dangerous, do you plan on taking on "anyone, anytime" or would you like a few "well-prepared" fights before a big named bout?

Hicklet Lau: I am a fighter, and yes I have made the mistake in the past of fighting top fighters on short notice. It's the fighter in me that hates to say no to such opportunities, BUT I will only take fights from now on only if I feel I am well prepared for the fight that is offered to me. I have nothing to prove anymore, everyone knows I am a warrior; now I must show I can also be a wise bussiness man.

TalkingBoxing: The conditions you fight under with short notice and adding weight against the best in boxing, I feel that no one could come close to your success...What do you attribute that to?

Hicklet Lau: Taking on bigger guys on short notice is certainly something of my impatience. I feel I am so underrated and wish to show my abilities to the world. I fear no one and know I can do more then just hang with the big guys. I just wish life was easier, but hey I'll take the hand that God gives me.

TalkingBoxing: Last time we spoke [interview], names like Angel Manfredy, Ricardo Williams and James Leija deemed you to dangerous of a fight, do you still have difficulty finding a fight with ample time?

Hicklet Lau: Actually, I think the loss to Cintron has opened more doors for me. I still recieves calls from promoters to use me as a stepping stone....I would hate to be the guy that trips over this stone.

TalkingBoxing: Who do you want within the year for a fight?

Hicklet Lau: I would like a chance at a major title. Names are not important to me, but it would be nice to see Cintron become the champion and then give me a rematch when we both weigh the same.

TalkingBoxing: Anything you would like to say to your fans?

Hicklet Lau: I am still here, so stay tuned.

TalkingBoxing would like to say thanks to a true warrior and asset of the game Hicklet Lau for taking time out of his hectic schedule to answer some questions for us. We wish you the best in your upcoming fights!
