Peter Manfredo: The New Pride of Providence
TalkingBoxing catches up with the undefeated, NABO champ
by Julius Stecker
Last month fight fans saw the last of Rhode Island boxing legend Vinny Paz, a 5-division champion and boxing great. On May 14th everybody with a television set and a love for boxing needs to tune in to ESPN2's Friday Night Fights to see the new flavor of New England boxing and it isn't Patriots cornerback Ty Law. The flavor comes from the jr. middleweight divison as prospect Peter Manfredo Jr. is the new guy on the block.

Manfredo is the extremely talented, NABO jr. middleweight champion with a 20-0 record along with 10 coming by way of KO. Manfredo has mad boxing skills and great ring savvy for a guy at 23-years of age.

TalkingBoxing.com caught up with Manfredo to get his take on his upcoming fight against IBA Middleweight champion Anthony Bonsante (24-3-3, 13 KO). Manfredo is really excited about his upcoming fight, which will be his first main event on ESPN. "I am training extremely hard for this fight, we have brought in a few guys for some excellent sparring. One in particular is Victor Rosado from New York. Each of these guys has given me great work."

Manfredo's last performance was an eye-catching knockout of fellow contender and previously unbeaten Sherwin Davis. It not only caught my attention and millions of viewers, but the attention of The Ring Magazine. It possessed them to say in their June 2004 issue, "Manfredo is as good as advertised; this kid can fight." The praise from the boxing bible did not stop there, in their latest July edition they did a 3-page piece dedicated fully to Peter in their "New Faces" section.

In regards to all the hype, Peter was humble, yet still somewhat satisfied. He explained, "it feels good, I really did not get any publicity before when I first turned pro, probably because I wasn't in the Olympics. All the publicity and money went to guys like Ricardo Williams and Dante Craig, and they aren't better then I am, but to be honest with you I don't focus on that stuff. I am a family guy first and foremost and my real objective is to take care of my 2 year-old daughter and my wife."

Bonsante will present a tough challenge for Manfredo as he is a strong guy, who owns a victory over Tony Ayala Jr. Despite this, Manfredo is looking to make a statement on May 14th that it will carry him into bigger fights. The focused Manfredo said, "I want to showcase my boxing talent, and it is going to come down to who has the most heart. I am not one to make predictions, but I am confident that I will be victorious in this fight."

So remember to turn your TV sets to ESPN2 to see a top jr. middleweight prospect named Peter Manfredo Jr. on May 14th and I promise you it will not disappoint!
