Tokunbo Olajide Stepping Up and Ready for Ian Gardner

by Julius Stecker
11/17 - USBA Jr. Middleweight champion and Canadian, Tokunbo Olajide has a tremendous amount of talent. Evidence of that, are his 20-1 record, and his 17 knockouts. Olajide brings an exciting style and a willingness to put himself on the line at all costs.

This Saturday November 20th at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, Olajide will be taking on slick southpaw Ian Gardner (17-1) in a highly anticipated off TV match-up between two young and rising contenders. The bout will be a part of the under-card of "The Rematch" between Sugar Shane Mosley and Winky Wright. Olajide-Gardner is sure to have the attention of hardcore fight fans. TalkingBoxing.com caught up with the talented pugilist to get his take on the upcoming fight and much more.

"Training is going real good, I am in good shape," explained Olajide. Tokunbo, who is the brother of former world rated middleweight Michael Olajide, believes that coming from a boxing family has made things a lot easier for him.

"It is a lot easier, it allows me to have an in-depth understanding of the sport that a lot of fighters don't have."

In his last fight back in February, Olajide landed a picture perfect left hook that dropped Larry Marks in the 2nd round for good, giving the prospect his first title, the USBA jr. middleweight belt. Olajide feels he has the power and skill to win this upcoming encounter, maybe not by brutal knockout, but he has faith in a win nevertheless.

When questioned about his upcoming opponent Gardner, Olajide was respectful of him, but he feels he has what it takes to come on top. "I see myself winning the fight; I have faith in my abilities."

If you have ever had to opportunity to watch Tokunbo fight, you will notice that he brings excellent speed and great reflexes in the ring with him. According to Olajide, who is a former soccer standout, the only thing that makes a fighter sharp is staying active inside the ring. "Boxing and being inside the ring are the only things you can do to stay sharp," said the 27-year old Olajide.

Come November 20th, Olajide has something in store for Gardner and his future opponents. He left us with this message for them, "The train is coming, so you better get out of the way."
