Scott Pemberton: A Money Fight on The Horizon
"I would also like to fight Jeff Lacy, if the money is right"

by Julius Stecker
NABF and IBU super-middleweight champ Scott Pemberton (27-3, 22 KO) is the Arturo Gatti of his division. "The Sandman" is arguably boxing's most exciting fighter north of 140 pounds, but for Scott there have been no money fights in sight. He has done all that has been asked of him, fighting all the guys Jimmy Birchfield puts in front of him. He knocked out a legitimate top 20 fighter, in Omar Sheika, and he gave Charles Brewer an amazing fight, before succumbing to a 6th round TKO loss. In fact, you could argue that his two fights with Sheika and his one with Brewer were among the top 20 action fights over the past two years.

When Pemberton fights, action happens, people stand up, and they appreciate what he has to offer. This Saturday, June 12th at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut televised on CN8 TV, Pemberton takes on Rick Camlin (33-3) in a fight that will go a long way to see if he can get that money fight he so much deserves. [TalkingBoxing.com will be ringside!]

TalkingBoxing.com caught up with Scott Pemberton to get his take on this upcoming fight and so much more.

Scott was in high spirits when he explained his upcoming fight. He stated, "Training went as well as it could have gone. I wish I would have had maybe two more weeks to get in shape, but you can always be in better shape."

Pemberton, who has perhaps one of the best right hands in the super middleweight division, is looking to lay his vaunted punching power on Camlin. Scott was scheduled to fight James Crawford, but Crawford had to pull out because of an injury, so he is taking this fight with Camlin without knowing much about him.

Sometimes that can be a concern, but Scott is not worried in the least. He explains, "I really don't know much about him, other then that he is a southpaw, and that he has a very good record. He may not have beaten top-notch guys, but he is a quality fighter. I am looking at it like this, he is trying to take food away from my family, from my daughter, and he is standing in the way of something I want. So I am very focused on him."

Pemberton who has fought his career in relative anonymity, but as of late, he has gotten the credit he deserves.

Scott was subject to a full-length Ring Magazine layout and he has been mentioned on Maxboxing.com as a potential Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy opponent.

While Scott is excited about his prospects, he is focused on money, and to him business is business. "I would fight Omar Sheika ten times again, if the money is right. I would also like to fight Jeff Lacy, if the money is right. You know what, I have met Jeff, we hung out and we have sparred, and he is a great guy. We gave each other some great work. But I would love to fight him if the money is there."

At the right old age of 37, Scott Pemberton he is one of the few guys who has reached his prime at such an advanced age and with all of that, he comes to appreciate other elder statesmen, who are making age seem like nothing more then a number, namely Bernard Hopkins.

"If I ever saw Bernard Hopkins, I would just want to give him a big hug, for what he does for older fighters like myself. He is such a great fighter, and for him to be doing what he is doing is incredible. Personally, I think he is going to crush De La Hoya. He is such a great all around fighter who does everything well. In my opinion, I even think he is even a better fighter then Marvelous Marvin Hagler was."

Scott will be laying it all on the line again come tomorrow night and he had this to say to the boxing world. "I am going to go out and try to do my best. Work behind my jab, and maybe get him out of there, or maybe this fight will go the distance, who knows, but if you all remember, Omar Sheika was said to have one of the best chins in boxing, but I ended up getting him out of there."
