Champions are people who're supposed to defend their gold entitlements at every opportunity presented them. The trouble is Rivera hasn't seen one interested challenger with the mentality of his rival having unrealistic expectations for a rewarding greenback. Speaking with Jose, you get the very first helpful hint of the changing tone in his voice regarding it, and the indication that it's not his problem.
He's right. After all, championship quality types aren't certainly men having to look too deeply into a schedule in order to be fitting fringe benefits like for luxury rooms, a better promotion, or even more money to compensate their whims going along in opposite directions where the real champ is waiting to fight. They should ought be jumping for the opportunities sakes to meet a champion in any best possible forms, even if they don't take quite to the promotion as a whole.
Does that promotion have any legitimate gripe should that fighter beat their pupil?

Jose Antonio Rivera
George Diaz Smith: Greetings Champ. Wish I could say Thomas Damgaard has his priorities straight by now. What are your feelings in reference to his wanting an additional $50,000 dollar insured holding King's ransom working on his end in a manner of speaking?
Jose Antonio Rivera: Well honestly that is something I cannot concern myself with. Damgaard has an opportunity to fight for the WBA World Championship and if he is going to pass it up because he feels that 50,000 is not enough money than that is on him. Fighters have to understand that before you start to demand all kinds of money you should win a World Title first. I went all the way to Germany to fight for the WBA World Championship for 50,000, I figured I would win the title first and then try to cash in.
Jose Antonio Rivera: Thank you. Yes I think he is looking at his accomplishments thus far and he feels that as a number one contender he should get more money. Maybe if I was in his shoes I will feel the same way but he also has to understand that the fight went to purse bid and Don King's bid was the winning bid.
He has the opportunity to fight in the Mecca of boxing (Madison Square Garden).
I don't have to say no more. As far as taking a ten rounder to keep busy, that would have been a good idea but I have an obligation to fight Damgaard as the number one contender and would not have been able to pull it off.
George Diaz Smith: Last we spoke On Line you told some of us here at our place that you have strengthened your right hand Jose by relaxing it and working with it. I just happen to think you have the most underrated left-hooks in the business, judging from the standpoint of watching the use of it you employed against the German fighter Trabant. I know you shoot that cross very well also.
Go over some of the things you've said regarding the development of your right hand that maybe some of us missed out on in not talking with you back then?
Jose Antonio Rivera: Again thanks. Basically what I had to do was relax my right hand and left hook at that, because I was tensing up at times and it was taking away from my power. I am a relaxed fighter so what I needed to do is just stay relaxed, roll with my opponents punches and unload, and when I unload just let the punches go and don't tense up, because it is not going to make me hit harder. I was very successful with this with my left hook, but I don't know why I would tense up with my right hand. Pretty much it is just going back to the basics.
George Diaz Smith: I read something about the boxer-actor Hector Camacho, Jr. having a ruckus that involves you. Tell us what exactly happened between you guys outside the ropes.
Jose Antonio Rivera: Absolutely nothing! I do not know him and I have never met him. He is just trying to get his name back out there after he was exposed. He figures it will be easier to talk about Champions then actually stepping up to fight them.
I know that being a World Champion makes me a target, but I have all these guys talking a lot of S*** and honestly I am just not having it no more. I know it is not my style to talk s*** about other fighters and I won't, but I will respond to their challenges. All I want my fans to understand is that I have a promoter Mr. King and he makes the fights. I am not at liberty to pick and choose who I fight.
George Diaz Smith: I do think if they made that match it'll be a most viable commodity. However let's see if you can take on the number two or third best opponent on should the Thomas Damgaard affair had indeed fallen through?
Would you by chance throw some good will gesture in his direction being that the Olympics are coming to possibly make his lionhearted heart flutter at the opportune opportunity? Or does he get stuck with the deal as it stands? Because Jose, you're certainly not a charity case by any means and you have to stay busy. Right?
Jose Antonio Rivera: No! He has to take the deal as it stands. I myself have to take less money because the fight went into purse bid, but that is how life is sometimes. We cannot always get what we want.
George Diaz Smith: Tell us some other opponents that you would like to fight?
Jose Antonio Rivera: I would like to unify, so that means Cory Spinks, the winner of Reid vs. Cintron for the WBO World Championship or any other big names that are out there.
George Diaz Smith: Has the sudden leap of welterweights to go to 154-pounds caught you a bit off guard in a sense, or is it just the way Jose of the boxing market that chooses to go there these days along those lines?
Jose Antonio Rivera: I cannot say that it has caught me off guard because fighters know that eventually a move up is bound to happen. Especially, when there is an opportunity to make a big fight for some big money. I myself will move up to jr. Middleweight sometime soon.
George Diaz Smith: Getting back to Damgaard for a second. The guy has actually called for retirement fighting someone like you because you're too much of a risk to take not seriously talking about big money. What does that do for your marketability from that remark said in effect?
Jose Antonio Rivera: As far as my marketability is concerned I really do not have an answer to that. I am trying to make a name for myself, but it just has not worked out for me just yet. I have a good name and I am recognized in many places, but it hasn't transcended into being able to get a big fight and actually getting paid for it.
I always have known that I am a very dangerous opponent because of my style and relentless pressure. I always felt that I won't get an opportunity to fight any of the big names because I myself did not have a big name, so it was too much to lose for (them) the top contenders or Champions.
Now though I am the WBA World Champion I shouldn't be running into problems with opponents not wanting to fight me. Usually when you are the Champ everybody wants to fight you.
George Diaz Smith: Swell Jose. Listen it's been a pleasure to ask you some of these rather probing questions regarding yourself. And know that with God as your head at all times in all of your endeavors… he shall have the keys for you to be met on time for your most timely dates for the appointments. God bless you Jose for giving us the opportunity to hear your sincere heart felt edifying mind coming across, highly intellectual, and motivational words for us all here to share along with our public domain.
Important News (Breaking in on our interview for a moment)
Rivera gets word-for-word on Camacho's loud mouth and Jose responds like this >>>>
Jose Antonio Rivera: About Camacho if Damgaard does not take the fight it will be a pleasure to step in the ring with you. Stop talking S*** and just sign on the dotted line. I know you like the attention and I know you think you are as good or better than your dad, but I will slap you into reality. The only name you have is your dads. I know I have no name, but at least I had to earn my no name.
I had to earn every title I have won. I have not been pampered all of my career, even to this day your people are being very selective as to who you fight. They are trying to protect the name your father sweated his ass off for. For that I can't blame them because your father is one of the greats of his time. You though have a complex because you know and lets be honest here everybody in boxing knows you can't tie your fathers shoes. I hope this motivates you not to get up at five in the morning to go running, but to sign on the dotted line and shut up already. Camacho lets be serious here.
If you really want to step up to the plate all you or your manager have to do is call Mr. Don King and he will call your bluff. You have already stated on the record that you will beat my ass and that is fine, but now your fans want to see it happen. You can't disappoint your fans Camacho. I won't hold my breath though because lets face it everybody knows you are all talk!
George Diaz Smith: Like I said Jose, still a viable commodity indeed my friend. Thanks for walking the walk and living up to taking all challenges. We're very proud of the way you're succeeding at it champ truly.
Jose Antonio Rivera: Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share with you and my fans. I do and always will put my life in God's hands. It will guarantee me with a good life no matter what happens here on out. If you trust GOD he will never disappoint you. Never! GOD bless you all.
George Diaz Smith: God bless you too brother! Hey if they were looking to get the cheek turned away, they'd get a whole new edification coming from you; I'll tell you that! Give my best regards to your promoter also and thank you, Jose. We really enjoyed it. Ache'.
Note: Since the interview we got word that the WBA had indeed sanctioned Rivera-Damgaard's the official approved welterweight championship. But one thing Rivera will find, and that's no shortage of an opponent.
