Omar Sheika: Mr. Excitement
Top super-middleweight catches up with TalkingBoxing

by Julius Stecker
There are not too many fighters as exciting or as fun to watch as Omar Sheika, 24-6, 17 KO's. Sheika's punching power and penchant for electrifying fights has made him a main stay on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights and formerly on USA's Tuesday Night Fights. He will be making another appearance on Tuesday June 15th on ESPN2 at The Belvedere in Elk Grove Village Illinois, where he will be taking on Manu Ntoh (15-7-1), a tough iron chinned veteran fighter.

The Paterson, New Jersey native gave fight fans perhaps two of the most exciting fights over the past couple of years, when he engaged IBU/NABF champion Scott Pemberton in 2 memorable affairs.

Their first fight last July was a split decision loss that could have gone either way. Their second fight, on January 26th of this year, was evening better, but Sheika was stopped in the 10th round of possibly the best fight this year so far.

Last month Sheika got back on the winning track with a crushing 2nd round knockout victory over Journeyman Etienne Whitaker. TalkingBoxing.com caught up with the thrilling Sheika to get his views on his career and much more.

Sheika is excited about his upcoming bout with Ntoh. "I know he is a tough kid, but I will be ready for anything. I am completely focused."

Sheika is quite focused on the task at hand but he feels that there is a 3rd installment with the hard-hitting Pemberton on the horizon. He xplains, "Yeah that is the fight I really want right now. I think he wants it too, and we have had some discussions. The last fight I dehydrated myself and that effected me greatly, hopefully for a third fight, we could get Showtime or HBO to pick up the fight."

A 3rd fight would be another classic; that would have fight fans salivating. HBO or Showtime would be foolish not to pick that fight up if it does come off, especially Showtime. It would be a fight that would bring nothing but excitement. It would represent what this sport is all about, and it would give these two guys the paid day they both so desperately deserve.

If a Sheika-Pemberton bout does not come into fruition, then Sheika may be looking elsewhere, and maybe one guy in particular, Charles Brewer. He explains, "Definitely I would take that fight, I am really willing to fight anybody, but a fight with Brewer would be big, with him being from Philly and me being from Jersey."

Yet again, if Sheika prevails June 15th on ESPN2, this would be another good fight between Sheika and Brewer that Showtime could pick up that would be absolutely rousing.

But enough with the hypothetical situations, Sheika will be fighting June 15th, and he is looking to once again establish himself as a perennial contender in the Super Middleweight division.

"Hopefully I will become a world champion in the near future. I am hoping to get a 3rd fight with Scott Pemberton. Right now I am as confident as I ever been in my career."
