Vanderpool Striving to become a World Champ
"I don't expect this fight to go 12 rounds"

by Julius Stecker

This top rated super-middleweight has been waiting for this opportunity for quite some time now. On May 13th of 2000, Syd "The Jewel" Vanderpool, 35-2, was given a shot at the best middleweight fighter of the past 15 years, Bernard Hopkins. Vanderpool went 12-rounds giving Hopkins a reasonably hard scrap, but came up on the short that night losing a unanimous decision.

From that day forward Vanderpool vowed to never let that opportunity slip away again. Vanderpool was a man of his word, having been on a tear since that fight, winning 7 in a row, defeating the likes of Jaffa Ballagou and Tito Mendoza with the latter performance earning him the title shot.

Now he has been given word that he will be given his second chance at a world title, taking on the young and highly regarded, undefeated former Olympian Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy, 16-0, live on Showtime October 2nd at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

TalkingBoxing.com caught up with the underrated Vanderpool to get his feelings before the upcoming showdown.

Vanderpool is a hard worker who takes his training very seriously saying, "I am training right now, I have 7 more weeks to go. But everything is going right on schedule."

'The Jewel', as Vanderpool is often referred to as, knows that this fight is going to be the most important fight of his career and does not plan on letting this opportunity pass him by.

In Lacy, he is going to be dealing with a strong and determined fighter, who possesses perhaps the best left hook in the super-middleweight division. While Vanderpool respects Lacy, he believes he sees some things he can take advantage of. "I definitely see some chinks in his armor. It is going to be a great match-up. A lot of people will talk about his power. But I have power too," said Vanderpool.

This fight has the makings of being a very explosive affair between Vanderpool's experience and powerful right hand, and Lacy's youth and tremendous left hook. It will make for high drama come October 2nd.

The IBF #1 ranked contender Vanderpool explains, "Oh for sure this is going to be a great action fight. It is going to be good for people to see me in the spotlight on Showtime. A lot of people may be saying to themselves, 'what ever happened to Syd Vanderpool', and then after this fight they will be saying, 'oh there he is, that guy sure got a lot better.'

Fight fans take notice, because this top super-middleweight contender will be at his finest on October 2nd against Jeff Lacy. Vanderpool last words were simply, "Expect fireworks, Lacy is going to be coming, I am going to be coming. I don't expect this fight to go 12 rounds."
