For "Touch of Sleep", Resiliency Pays Off
"I like to fight these bigger guys, they bring out the best in me"

by Julius Stecker

Top contender DaVarryl "The Touch of Sleep" Williamson has dealt with adversity the only way he knows how, walking right through it, not giving a second thought. Last September, a first round knockout loss to highly ranked "Baby" Joe Mesi left many fans wondering if Williamson would pack it in. The WBC #11th ranked heavyweight has completely different plans, taking an unwavering stance to make himself into a top heavyweight once again.

Rewind to this past April, after a 9th round knockout of Kendrick Releford in January, Williamson stepped up to the plate, defeating the respected Eliecer Castillo, 26-3-2, by a 12-round majority decision for the NABF title.

Now on the October 2nd Showtime mega-fight card, Williamson has been given a shot at glory and redemption, as he faces former WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko, 42-3, in a fight that will go a long way in showing where each fighter is at in there respective boxing careers.

TalkingBoxing.com caught up with the hard punching charismatic Williamson to get his feelings on this huge opportunity.

Williamson is elated about the opportunity to get the huge Ukrainian inside the ring, explaining, "I am very excited, I happy to get this opportunity. I have such a great support system with great people around me."

Williamson still has a bitter taste from his bout with Joe Mesi, but knows he is a much better fighter since the loss. "It is great that this fight will be taking place a year after the Mesi fight last year, because I know that this fight and performance is going to be so much better," said Williamson, who sports a 20-2 record.

Williamson has dealt with adversity throughout his entire boxing career, overcoming one amateur loss to all-time great Cuban Amateur Felix Savon, so he knows a little about rising up, when people believe he is down.

"It goes all the way back to my childhood. I have had to adapt to certain situations in my life. I went through changes whether it was in football, basketball, comedy, or boxing. So I have seen all of this before," said Williamson.

He continued, "you have to remember I have lost to guys in the amateurs, guys like Nate Jones, Felix Savon and Michael Bennett. And that ended up making me a better fighter. A lot of people will look at my age too and count me out, but to me I am in my prime. I may be 36 years old, but I have the body of 26-year-old and the mind of a 36-year-old."

Williamson is not going to be as big as Wladimir, but he relishes the thought of getting the big 6'8" Klitschsko in the ring, having knocked out guys 6'6" or higher, namely Kevin McBride, Ed White, and Corey Sanders (not the former WBO champion).

So at 6'4", is Williamson the least bit intimidated by Klitchsko's size? He answered saying, "You know what, I like to fight these bigger guys. They bring out the best in me. If you take a look at my record I do my best against these really big guys, if anything, I have more problems with smaller fighters."

The 'Touch of Sleep' will try to make these none believers into believers come October 2nd, wrapping up the discussion by saying, "Expect a wonderful show."

It was well stated and DaVarryl is looking to make his mark on the heavyweight division once again.
