Rejuvenated Ellis Looks for a Comeback

by Julius Stecker
4/22 - Kenny Ellis is in comeback mode right now. This past June, Ellis went into fellow middleweight contender Troy Rowland’s back yard at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, Michigan on ESPN. After hurting Rowland early in the fight, he failed to win a round the rest of the way.

Having seen Kenny in there with Kingsley Ikeke and a few others, the Tacoma, Washington native just did not look like the same defensive specialist we came to expect from the past.

So Ellis took some time off, reflected and now he is looking to return to the middleweight division for his last shot at money and glory. Kenny offered his opinions to TalkingBoxing.com as part of a brief interview before his upcoming fight on May 14th.

“Honestly, right now I feel I have been rejuvenated. I had to sit down and reflect on some things,” explained Ellis.

The Emerald City Assassin has experienced many ups and downs his entire pro career. He has had career defining wins over tough pugs like Darrel Woods, and Fernando Zuniga, but he has also experienced heartbreak, with tough losses to the aforementioned Troy Rowland, Kingsley Ikeke, and Bronco McKart.

“People should know I am not damaged goods. I have never been. I think when I am at my best, I am the best defensive technician in the sport,” said Ellis.

Ellis sited having to cut tremendous amounts of weight as part of his downfall in the Rowland fight, but feels now he has the discipline to take it to the next level in his career.

With continued work with his trainer, former world champion Greg Haugen, Ellis believes a commitment to a new diet will lead to bigger and better things.

A lot of fight fans might remember Ellis’s brave performance against Ikeke in 2003 and Ellis feels somewhat cheated in that fight.

“I would fight him again. I mean the referee stopped the fight when there was a little trickle of blood. You don’t stop a fight of that magnitude with a little trickle of blood. The fight was even when it was stopped,” explained Ellis.

While a fight with Ikeke would be something Ellis would love, he is just looking to fight in front of his fans once again.

“Expect Kenny Ellis to get back and be 100%. I am going to try and be the best. Training is going great, my opponents better watch out, because I might pierce their hearts.”
