Cruiserweight Matt Godfrey Begins His Quest to the Top

by Julius Stecker
1/21 - Success is something that has followed top cruiserweight prospect Matt Godfrey around since day one. The 24-year old Godfrey sports a spectacular amateur career, which consisted of a record of 194-23 and numerous accolades including the 2004 Everlast U.S. Amateur Championships.

Last year Godfrey came up just short of making the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, yet he was not discouraged, deciding to turn professional and he has been on a tear ever since. Godfrey's current record stands at 6-0 with 4 knockouts and with a big date scheduled in March, he will be looking to make a name for himself in 2005.

TalkingBoxing caught up with the Cruiserweight prospect to get his perspective on the fight game and so much more.

“As time progresses the plan is be a heavyweight, but being 6’1” and walking around at 210 and 215 pounds, being a cruiserweight right now is best for me,” explained Godfrey.

Godfrey is a silky smooth boxer, who isn’t afraid to mix it up when he has to with a nice blend of speed and power, which will make him a force to be reckoned with in the near future.

With the a cruiserweight division filled with young exciting fighters like, Felix Cora Jr. and Kelvin Davis; Godfrey will be looking for a chance to prove himself to be listed among those excellent young fighters.

When watching Godfrey fight, you see a lot of athleticism in his performances, and one would wonder if there are any other things Godfrey can do, besides fight.

“I did play basketball early on high school, but to be the best in this game. You have to commit yourself full time, so I decided to put the other sports aside,” said Godfrey.

And, as it turns out basketball is the not the only talent Godfrey has. Matt has a vast knowledge of NFL football that would make any ESPN analyst jealous and when it comes to the New England Patriots, even Bill Belichick would be impressed with his concept of roster and scheme. Matt has worked out with Patriot Receiver David Patten and another Patriot receiver, David Givens, has come to see him fight. Godfrey even offered his prediction on this weekends Steelers-Patriots AFC Championship battle.

“Oh yeah the Patriots are going to win. Bill Belichick has beaten the last 13 quarterbacks he has faced for a 2nd time. While it will be tough in Pittsburgh, the Patriots will win.”

Godfrey presented more then just his football predictions. He offered his take on his future as a fighter as well.

“I expect good things, my promoter has some things lined up with ESPN for me, and I am looking to fight for a world title in the next couple of years. I will work my way to the top,” said Godfrey.

Godfrey’s future is bright, and don’t be surprised if he becomes the first world champion slash NFL assistant coach.
