"I want to make a run at these titles, I want to have somewhere between 5 and 6 fights"
by
Julius Stecker
3/4 - NABF Featherweight champion and rising star
Robert “The Ghost”
Guerrero, 14-0-1, has boxing pundits excited with his talent, good looks and as a young guy, he has a lot of humility and class. Lets say its very easy to be a "Ghost" fan. The 21-year old is one of boxing’s top prospects and is just a handful of fights away from a major title shot. "I want to make a run at these titles, I want to have somewhere between 5 and 6 fights," Guerrero said about the upcoming year. Guerrero, who is trained by John Bray, combines outstanding size, with smooth boxing skills in the featherweight division. After last year's whirlwind putting on a tremendous performance in his four fights, "The Ghost" gets some national television time on April 1st when he battles Adrian Valdez, 16-3-3, as part of 'SHOBOX: The Next Generation" Showtime fight card. Guerrero looks defend his NABF title for the first time against this young challenger after stopping Cesar Figueroa by TKO in December for the title.
TalkingBoxing.com caught up with Robert to get his take on the fight game.
ROBERT "THE GHOST" GUERRERO
Julius Stecker: How is training going Ghost?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: It is going great. I just finished up doing 50
rounds of work.
Julius Stecker: Great to hear, so who is your opponent going to be for
this upcoming fight?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: I am going to being fighting on April 1st on SHOBOX against Adrian Valdez.
Julius Stecker: What do you know about him?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: I don’t know much right now, but I know he is a
tough fighter.
"I don’t know much...but I know he is a tough fighter"
Julius Stecker: Moving on to a few of your last opponents, one in
particular, namely Enrique Sanchez, what did that
fight mean to you, beating a former world champion
like him?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: I think it is great fighting these guys who have
been champions, guys like Sanchez. It is great
experience fighting those experienced fighters.
Julius Stecker: Right now you are 21-years old and you are 14-0, are
you going to be ready for a world title fight soon?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: Yeah definitely, I want to fight the best there
is at 126. I want to be a great champion one-day, and
in order to do that I have to beat the best.
Julius Stecker: I remember a while back you mentioned that you and
Rocky Juarez could be the next great rivalry in
boxing, ala Morales-Barrera. Do you still feel that
way?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: It could become like that. It will probably be
down the line though. Maybe we will do it at 130.
Julius Stecker: You mention 130, but do you feel comfortable at 126?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: I feel very comfortable; I have no problem making
126. But once it is becoming abusive to my body I
will make the move up to 130.
Julius Stecker: You’re a big fight fan; did you get a chance to check
out Miguel Cotto-DeMarcus Corley, and what did you think about Cotto
getting hurt?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: I think it is the punch you don’t see, that is
the one that hurts you. He just didn’t see it coming,
if you watched closely the other punches didn’t really
affect him. It was the punch he didn’t see that hurt
him.
Julius Stecker: Let’s get back to your career, how active do you want
to be this year?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: I want to make a run at these titles, I want to
have somewhere between 5 and 6 fights.
Julius Stecker: So where do you see yourself fitting in the
featherweight division?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: I see myself right there in the mix. I am 5’9”
and I have a 71” inch reach. And I am still growing.
I have John Bray as my trainer, and I have grown so
much as a fighter since this past year. I keep
improving everyday. John Bray is covering everything,
from footwork, defense, and offense. He is helping me
get better at everything.
Julius Stecker: I heard I rumor you have been sparring with Jose
Celaya, isn’t he a Jr. Middleweight?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: I start sparring next week. I will be sparring
with Jose Celaya though. And he is great to spar
with. He is a great boxer, who is smart, plus he is
very strong.
Julius Stecker: Robert, man you are sparring with big guys bro, but
you are a big featherweight, do you see yourself as
future multi-division champion?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: Oh definitely. I think I can be three or four division champion. My body has a lot of filling out to do. So
we will see how far I get.
"I think I can be three or four division champion"
Julius Stecker: You mention big featherweights and multi-division
champions; do you ever get a chance to watch Alexis
Arguello?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: Funny you mention that, we were just watching
some Alexis Arguello fights the other day. I was
watching his fight with Bazooka Limon, I like the way
he was breaking him down. I like how he fires his
right hand from his chin.
Julius Stecker: Great to see you are a student of the game. In
closing though what do have to say your fans before
this upcoming fight?
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: Expect to see a good fight, and for me to do my
best.
Julius Stecker: Thanks brother, we appreciate your time.
Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero: No thank you Julius. I appreciate your time.
