4/15 - Fresh off a decision win over the rugged Aundalen Sloan in January, 26-year old rising middleweight prospect
Michael Walker gets back in the swing of things next Friday, April 22nd on Telefutura's
Solo Boxeo show. His opponent, Jimmy Gonzalez, has been a fighter "Midnight Stalker" had his eye on since the amatuers. "I get to fight him in the pros where it counts," Walker said. "Where it means more to him and I."
At 6-0, the exciting Chicago born and bread fighter is perhaps the most talented in the One in a Million Promotions stable and will be showcased at Cicero Stadium in Cicero, Illinois next week. Well worth viewing for fight fans if it makes the televised portion. TalkingBoxing.com caught up with the Walker to get his feelings on the upcoming encounter.
MICHAEL WALKER
TalkingBoxing: How is training going right now?
Mike Walker: Great Julius. I have been training with Kevin Rooney. I have been learning a lot of new things from him and getting good sparring with a Leonard Pierre (16-0). I'm feeling really good right now.
TalkingBoxing: So when is your next fight?
Mike Walker: April 22nd in Chicago on Telefutura Solo Boxeo.
TalkingBoxing: What do you know about your opponent?
Mike Walker: He is an ok fighter. I wanted to fight him in the amateurs. But now I get to fight him in the pros where it counts. Where it means more to him and I.
TalkingBoxing: You have a lot of Windy City and Midwest fight fans excited about the possibilities of your career, so in other words, what is like to have that kind of hype behind you?
Mike Walker: It's good to finally be recognized and respected. And I thank God every day for my talent and Octavius James and One In A Million Inc. for these opportunities. I give my trainers Carlos Jones and Martin McGarry a lot of credit for helping me get to this level.
TalkingBoxing: How active do you want to be the remainder of the year?
Mike Walker: When my manager Octavius tells me to fight I fight and as active as he wants me to no questions ask. Also as long as my health and condition allows me to do what I do.
TalkingBoxing: Every One In A Million fighter I ever spoke to talks about the family like atmosphere of the promotional company, elaborate on that a little.
Mike Walker: All of us are like brothers. Octavius forms that kind of unity for us. We are one big happy family. We don't play family we are family. When one of us is in the ring it's like all of us are in there with him. Shay and I have been together since the amateurs and we are very close. Whenever it is fight time we all join together and try to get the job done.
TalkingBoxing: Do you think Ali Supreme's latest NABF title winning performance, will lead to more national exposure for One In A Million fighters like yourself?
Mike Walker: Of Course. No questions about it. I'm on a card with him in May at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza in Merrillville, In. Along with more One In A Million fighters that are talented just like myself. We are all proud of Ali for bringing the title back to our stable.
TalkingBoxing: In your opinion when will you be ready for a regional title like a USBA or NABF title shot?
Mike Walker: Right now I know Octavius has been in some talks. So, I'm guessing some time by the end of the year. Or we are going to bring the New Year in with a bang.
TalkingBoxing: Can we expect a sensational performance from you on the April 22nd card?
Mike Walker: I don't know about sensational. I leave that up my trainers and the fans to say what my performance was. All I know is I'm coming ready April 22nd.
TalkingBoxing: What can fight fans expect from you for the remainder of your career?
Mike Walker: To perform at the best ability every time and try to inspire up and coming fighters. Represent One In A Million well. And show that Chicago and the Midwest have some of the most talented boxers around. Thanks Julius
